I'm beginning to hate my local NAPA...they used to be 'good' but they are almost to the point of being another 'AutoZonk'...

Today I went to grab a set of your recommended parts to see how they'd do in the duster...

I tryed to custom order the Standard-Bluestreak cap...NAPA won't order it and they tryed to sell and Echlin cap (and you can tell the posts looked like crap)...Luckily my local 'mom and pop' shop had two at their wholesaler and should be in tomorrow... (unlike the rotor you recommended which will be in from Denver in 4 days...LOL)

I also tryed to order from NAPA the 'upgraded' distributor gear (the ol'...the guy said they're made of nylon...jeeezz...

Thanks for the recommendations for better quality/functional parts, will let you know how things turn out (plus or minus the easter egg hunt)...up next, magnecore wires (which according to the specs, they make a really nice set of wires for crank trigger/EFI set setups that conduct some good spark with EMI suppression)... :D

thanks again!

Careful, even bluestreak caps aren't all that and a bucket of chips. I bought one new that I had to return because there was a hairline crack on the side of the center charcol point thats hardly noticable until you look really really close.

The nylon gear is fine, but if you want the steel gear, just have NAPA order part number DG 404

Interesting, I'll keep an eye on that. That sounds like the kind of "whoops" defect that happens to every company now and then. The problem with Echlin caps, on the other hand, is systemic—every single one I've looked at in the last decade has had the problem.

I should have the caps and rotor in hand this afternoon (I will refuse the caps if I find the crack...parts stores hate me because I spend a few minutes looking py purchase over before wanting to pay for it....)

Charlie, I forgot to mention I ordered the DG-404 and the counter guy said they were a nylon distributor gear...we'll find out if the guy was on crack in a few more days...

weeeee....

Curious, I admit ignorance here - why would one want a steel distributor gear? Theres not much stress on that point, all it has to do is turn the weight of the rotor which is measured in what, grams?

Dan - yea I would of orderd another bluestreak cap but the guy said it would fo took x days to do so and I needed the car running asap. I've been having bad luck with rotors too - the tip keeps getting pitted. I've tried several brands including bluestreaks. Every couple hundred miles they start pitting. They still work but that shouldn't happen so soon should it? Or maybe the msd6 box needs some extra heavy duty cap/rotor.

Soon enough I'll remove the distributor all together and do ford edis ala megasquirt.

Good question. I have no idea why NAPA Echlin DG-404 (iron distributor drive pinion) existed. It was not sold as a performance part. The factory always used nylon pinions. The only advantage I can think of with iron is that the DG-404 can be installed exactly as it comes out of the box; you don't have to futz around redrilling it the way you must do with the nylon pinion to get the distributor shaft endfloat correct.

NAPA Echlin long-tip rotor # MO-3000. Usually special order. Tip is 0.060" longer to reduce under-cap arcing and resultant rotor pitting.

Got the caps and they are very very nice, no cracks and no plastic shavings and the posts don't look like crap either... the MO-3000 rotor looks like a good compliment to the cap.

I'm with Dan on the DG-404...I had an OEM gear crack on me and a few where the teeth have been chipped for who knows what reason(long ago in my parent's stock cars). When I ordered a replacement nylon one recently, I actually had to install it and redrill the hole to get it to accept the roll pin properly. I'd like to have a nice quality unit to install, with the iron one I probably can lap the gear in at the same time as the nice oil pump gear that doc sold me...

Thanks again Dan!
