Ok, do it, NOW!!!
the only thing I wouldn´t do is the 390/hyperpak/turbo combo.
I would stay with a "short" manifold with the turbo, for some reason :?
Now, if you went to efi.....

Longer letter, longer project. Really, I wish the best of luck to you. Not too many of my "want to's" ever happen for one reason or another. Usually money is the issue. My wonderful wife assures me that soon I will be able to do about any reasonable project I choose. Good things in store.

Well! Ill comment. I have a 5 speed car and thats easy and satisfying. I have a pretty light street car...and I think 2700lbs with a turbo and 11.75 rotors is gonna be hard to do. (mine weighs 3000lbs in street trim) I get almost 25mpg US but make 200 HP at the most and only do highway driving.

I think 250hp, 27mpg and 2900lbs at 6 lbs will be a good trick. Drop the AC , big brakes, 3 MPG and 100HP and yer in!

I understand you there. Part of the reason this has any chance of happening is because I got the car for free and I have most of the part already. I do need the intake and carb, though.

The bigger parts of the plan are maybe just wish list items, but I hope not. Time will tell.

Read your build up with interest. Maybe with time I can follow suit. :D

Well, the weight is a guess based on a shipping weight I found. According to the book, the difference in shipping weights between the Valiant and LeBaron should be about 300 lb, and my LeBaron weights 3050 with me in it. I'm not arguing with you as I know shipping weights are pretty far off, only giving some history behind my guess.

Well, that gives me hope for the mileage.

I could be happy with that, as well. 8)

The AC is a far distant plan, so no worries about dropping it.

The big brakes are a must. I have always leaned towards roadracing and in my opinion the extra weight is worth the extra stopping power. More importantly, it's what I have to put on.

As they say, time will tell.

You could always build up the lebaron for more power and fuel economy at the same time. One of the guys on the turbododge forum has a lancer (4dr hatch lebaron) that averages 38 mpg on the highway with approx 300 hp. But that is more of an exception than the standard. The valiant will always have worse aerodynamics than a lebaron and the weights will be similar. The trans in your lebaron is a extremely strong piece but the gearing (3.85 ring gear) isn't the best for ultimate fuel economy. I have plans for my V100 that sound a lot like yours, but I will freely admit that my plans are progressing extremely slowly. For economy with turbo you should plan on mpi. Good luck with your project and take plenty of pictures.

Well, I've had a truly horrible experience with a Holley carb and a turbo. But I'm not sure how much to blame on Holley and how much to blame on a machine shop that the previous owner had prepare the carb for boost. That carb had problems and wouldn't even work well without boost. Right now I'm in the process of installing EFI instead.

I doubt you'll be able to get 25 mpg with a carb. However, the good thing about turbo / EFI motors is that they can be very docile when driving around on low boost. More power doesn't always mean less mileage with these - if you can avoid lead-footed driving.

As for the big brakes, I'll definitely say they are worthwhile. If you are worried they'll add too much weight, you can fix that with aftermarket adapters and four-piston aluminum calipers. :D

DionR

I have owned multiple fwd turbo cars of the 80's. and they are fun.. 300 hp out of a turbo 2.2 is an easy acheivement. the super 60 kit is a prime example of it. upgraded fuel pump //super 60 turbo// +40 injectors // remap of the computer to accomdate the air and fuel.. and it still has street manners. easily driven on street and decent fuel economy. if you get a custom calibration that set up can easily take you closer to 400 hp but it loses some of its street manners.

I just bought a 70 dart swinger and I am heading down the exact road as you. The only difference is I plan on going injected instead of carbed. I was looking in the 300 to 350 hp range myself. I am reasonably sure you could get to 20 mpg on a turbo set up but 25 to 30 may be pushing it. Granted a turbo motor that makes hp will have better economy than the old school builders of more cubic inches!!!!!!! but even with a turbo you have to tune it to your intended results. you may get 25+mpg but you will probably forfeit some of the 300 hp to get there but all in all i do not think you are off in the clouds. or dreaming or what ever you said.. lol

If you insist on carbs i suggest you get one from a turbo pontiac trans am of the early 80's. or serioulsy consider webers or dellarto's. much more tunable and adaptable to turbocharging than a holley. not to say a holley can NOT be done its just harder/more expensive when you add in the alterations.

I am near the end of a turbocharged 4 cyl dakota pick up with twin 45dcoe sidedraft webers. The 2 carbs the intakes and linkage kit was around 1,000 dollars.. just to let you know.so hold on to your wallet

also webers are good for 10 psi all day long. but no good past 15 psi of boost. you will damage the internals of the carb. i talked to a guy from
www.rotaryshack.com
he says he can alter a weber to take 25psi.

I also talked to a guy in wisconsin who tried to prove you could make as much power with carbs as injection on a fwd turbo car at 18 psi he was pushing raw fuel out the throttle linkage shafts into the engine compartment. he gave up and went back to injection but it was a cool car.

I have not run my turbo dakota project so i can not attest to how hard it is to get them tuned right under boost yet // but i will be more than happy to discuss share any info i find out when the time comes.

hope this helps out and good luck on your toy.

I've already build a setup for an extra injector, just never installed it. With that and a diode to trick the computer I could up the boost to over 15 psi and make an easy 250 hp. Problem is, I've spent a month and a half on it and just last week figured out what was wrong. Because of that, I've debated about moving away from the FWD stuff a bit. Plus, I'm really tired of trying to launch a FWD car and really miss RWD.

I've read about your problems, and I will admit it has given me pause about using the Holley. I just don't want to try a Carter as the Holley mods are well know, and I already have to deal with a vaccum secondary setup without having to make a differnt kind of carb work. Added to that is the difficult of finding a 400 cfm Carter and I don't want to try to make a 500 work.

There is a '69 Barracuda running around in Seattle with a 390 Holley. He loves it, from what I've heard.

Exactly why I want a turbo!

The Viper caliper swap is sweet!!! If only....
