Just a tip. I replaced the carb base gasket and bowl gasket today a month after rebuilding my rebuilt carburetor (Don't ask). They where leaking badly. Removing them was like removing tar paper...very sticky stuff and alot of scraping to clean the manifold, bottem of carb, and float bowl. The Napa bowl gasket bought seperatly (Part #2-7665) is cork-like like a normal bowl gasket and a Fel-Pro base gasket (#60125) is good for multiple reuse, at least in my experience. This is for a Holley 1920.

Yeah...it's getting difficult to find good-quality carb kits. Last time I checked, Standard-Hygrade was making good ones, but I haven't checked in awhile. I do remember avoiding the NAPA kits.

Napa quality seems to have plummeted. I rebuilt the front suspension in my Ford van a little over a year ago and it is already sloppy again. I lube it with moly based lube every few months too. Its too bad. Napa used to be good stuff.

NAPA and most of their suppliers, like every other corporation these days, have been taken over by MBAssholes who consider it beneath their station in life to know anything about the goods or services their company provides. That's for icky people with funny names and grease under their fingernails, not for fabulous MBA-holders. Light bulbs, oil filters, ball joints, whatever, doesn't matter, it's all "product" to them. Doesn't matter where it's built (China's good!) because all you have to do is make sure the Chinese factory is ISO 9001, ISO 14002 and ISO 56410837112 certified, and the stuff it makes is as good as anything. They know 'cause they learned it in MBA school.

I spent 3 hours replacing the rusty old rear brake caliper on my sons 91 Laser last weekend with a trusty new NAPA caliper........long story short, got all done, went to bleed new caliper.........already bleeding itself with no way to shut off...some idiot cross-threaded the new bleed valve in so it wouldn't shut or open completely, and worse yet, couldn't even get it out to retap and replace it.........then passed quality control also......and....it was their last one on a Sunday...that's my NAPA story for this week....

ISO 900x was only intended to make the manufacturing process
consistent. That means if you make bad slant six parts you can make
them just as bad the next time.

There must have been some assumption that the manufacturers would
aspire to make good parts and adjust the procedures toward better
quality output. It seems cheaper was the goal of most manufacturers not
better. But my point is ISO900x only gives consistency.

Nominally, you're right. It doesn't matter if your procedure is to have a trained gorilla sitting on a green barstool at the end of the assembly line, listening to 8-track Frank Sinatra tapes, eating bananas and occasionally throwing poo...as long as it's documented that your procedure is to have a trained gorilla sitting on a green barstool at the end of the assembly line, listening to 8-track Frank Sinatra tapes, eating bananas and occasionally throwing poo. As long as it's documented, you're ISO-nine-thousand-and-whatever compliant.

It's a scam, right from the start: As soon as it was introduced and the first few companies got it, everyone had to get it, because "Oh, you're not ISO-9001? Your competitor is. I guess you're not as good." (Then, shortly after that, "Oh, you're not ISO-9001? Sorry, our ISO-9001 requires that we only do business with ISO-9001 companies.")

From that point forward, it's been a never-ending tailchase of newer revisions of ISO-9001 (9002, 14000, etc.): "Oh, you're ISO-9001-94A? Your competitor is ISO-9001-96C. Sorry, our ISO-9001 requires that we only do business with companies with up-to-date ISO-9001 certifications."

Tremendous amounts of man-time and money are squandered on this crapola. Whole, entire job descriptions entail nothing but ISO compliance management.

When I'm elected king of the world, rule number one will be a 200-year moratorium on new MBA degrees, and immediate nullification of all those granted since 1980.

I try to stay away from buying any hard autoparts from chains. Luckily there's a parts shop that's been in business for 40 years right around the corner, and even though most of the parts I've gotten from them for my old cars have come in yellow stained, frayed, dented boxes, they're still great. I just wish the price for those parts was the same as when they were originally put on the shelves in there
I used a Standard Hygrade kit to rebuild my Holley 1945. Works like a champ, for now.

All this mess reminds me of a story a friend just told me. He owns a car "customization" business. (i.e. he pays another friend to install stereos and the like.) He recently broke an inside door handle while trying to remove a door panel and called me asking if I could get one for him through my job at O'Reilly's. After I told him to call a dealer, he decided to rig so that it would look ok and the next time the owner used the handle, it would break, thus absolving him of responsibility. Makes me kinda glad I didn't take his offer to get involved. This same friend is currently pursing a degree in business and marketing. :?

When I worked for IBM, they had an extensive ISO compliance program that worked it's way from corporate business controls all the way down to the warehouse floor. They used Lotus Domino for the document handler and versioning. My current employer uses MS Word, Excel spreadsheets and a guy slowly going through to make sure everyone's documents are in order. He tried to give me and my department a hard time because our department procedure list contained a no longer existing procedure. I suggested he just take it off, which he did not. After all, it's not his job to correct our procedure list, just point out inconsitencies. I took his master procedure spreadsheet list and started going though it to determine which ones we actually needed. His master list contained entries that were obsoleted out, had different titles than the actual documents or different document numbers than the titles implied. Of course, those procedures are like road signs, merely suggestions.

Nice! I hope santa leaves him a lump of coal and a small-claims lawsuit. And may the ants of a thousand camels infest his armpits.
