There was a request in the Parts Section for pics of the Feather Duster Exhaust pipe... my next post will have 7 pics for a total of 700k of download (that was the minimum my camera would do with compression on VGA mode....)....

This pipe is meant for the more roomy engine bay of the 1967-1976 A-body (and has a cat convertor so 1975-1976 years). Early A-body guys can easily replicate it but may have to check the clearances and position of mufflers, (don't need the cat. you have a pre-74 car)....


just wanted to warn the guys with dial-up...

I have an OEM FD header and pipe that I'll be keeping in case I want to explore the whole realm of the 'mileage monster' at a later date on another car...Next to that pipe on the right is a similar pipe I had made for my 1974 Duster (no cat.conv. added 1 mpg over stock on a stock '74 225 with 3spd manual...and some seat of the pants power...)

The Feather Duster pipe comes in two sections, with a 2.25" header pipe from the manifold to the flange...stock 1976's will have a stock 1.875" header pipe (just like any other stock pipe size, the pipe comes apart for servicing/ easier replacement of the cat...)

From the muffler on back the stock pipe is stock 1.875" (probably less at the axle bends)...my 'power pipe' has a generic turbo muffler and is 2" pipe to the back and no turn down (the pipe shop added a neat looking chrome tip he had on the back shelf for fun...woohoo!) :wink:

Picture of the Cat. Convertor on the stock pipe, sits under the driver's side pan (an aluminum heat sheild is screwed under the pan to keep the driver's carpet/seat/butt from baking), the rear section of pipe is held up by a bracket fastened to the tranny crossmember (like on F-body cars)

Very interesting, and much what I want to do with my Satellite to get rid of those two 90 degree bends. A few questions though. How to go about getting a 2 1/4" pipe to bolt up to a stock '73 exhaust manifold? Or is the Feather Duster manifold the same I.D. as mine? Should I go with a 2 1/2" pipe from the manifold to muffler, to compensate for the bends the muffler shop will have to do, or stay with the 2 1/4"? I am considering an offer for a split manifold, but don't feel its really needed for an otherwise stock slant.

2 1/4" should be plenty. The bigger the pipe the harder it gets to fit the bends where you need them.

You can get mandrel bend pipe sections and cut and weld to the shape you need.

Or as the pipe actually looks fairly straight, you might be able to get the 45 degree mandrel sections that have a swaged end so your just slipping sections over each other. (Or even get 2 3/8" pipe to connect the 2 1/4" sections together)

The feather duster 225 intake manifold is just an aluminum cast version of the the 1973+ EGR intake... and the exhaust manifold is a stock 225 manifold (with the later reinforcing ribs for strength though...)...

The 2.25" pipe fits just as well as the 1.875" pipe....(but better flow of exhaust...)

My info has all slant-6s, even the 1bbls, getting the 2-1/4" headpipe starting in '76. In '75, only the Feather Duster and Dart Lite are supposed to have gotten 2-/14".

Sadly Dan, I helped a couple kids at the end of town a few years back who inherited their dad's stock 1976 Dart Sport 225, A-904...

The header pipe was the 1.875" to the cat. convertor, the rear pipe was the same as shown in the pics, except they had the quiet package resonator...their build date was Feb. 76...

So not every car got the fatty pipe...(probably tryed to get rid of every spare one off the line as quick as they could...mopar always does stuff like that...the book says...but here is a car that left the factory like this...)

They restored the car...haven't heard from them in a while, if they kept the exhaust stock I'll have to get a picture for fun...

I'd want to do the following: (probably this order too)

1. 2 1/4" pipe to muffler
2. luxury car muffler for a large engine (I want to keep it quiet (luxury car part), and it would should be free flowing for a 6 (large engine part)
3. 2" pipe after muffler. The 1.875" does seem small, but you really don't need the 2 1/4" since the exhaust volume will be less after the muffler (cooler air has less volume)
4. Something like extrude hone the stock exhaust manifold. Get rid of casting irregularities, smooth the flow at junctions, make sure you don't step down anywhere sharply (i.e. at head, at header pipe). Small stepup's would be ok. Might be able to do it with sanding flap wheels on flexible shaft.

Above is for exhaust, then I'd clean up the intake manifold like the exhaust manifold. Eventually I'll get around to some headwork...........

Your ideas will be a clone of the 'power pipe' on the right, but the luxo muffler would keep the noise down (the turbo 'raaps' after 2000 rpm).

If you're pulling the stock to blueprint it, you might as well pull the head and gasket match it too (you'll notice a lot of extra pep after that move).
