HI

I'm going to be rebuilding my 67 slant six motor.

Just planning to put in new rings and bearings realy

But I am thinking of upping the cam to a 244 cam or a 252

Is there much difference in these cams and what would be the general recomendation?

I'm just building a peppy streat car.

So far it has the two barrel super six, 2 1/4 singe pipe on stock manifold, rebuilt head, ported and shaved 30thou with standard valves.

I want to get a bit more out of the motor with out going crazy on the $$

I know comp cams sells the 252 cam for about $150, but I have heard that the 244 is pretty good and can pic these up easily from motors from 1971 up.

any advise appreciated

You'll have to decide...

1972+ Stock cam (junkyard and don't forget to mark the proper lifters to match, or get new lifters- I have one taking up space in my garage with no lifters from a '74 block)...Small upgrade.

Mopar Performance '244' cam... better upgrade, much like stock with mor lift, would be a good street cam...too bad they don't make them any more...

Comp Cam 252...easy to get, close to the '244'...I use one, but a few people have had some oiling hole problems on the cam blank, so if you buy, compare to stock cam and mke sure you don't get a nasty suprise later.

good luck,

I would think you could even go to a Comp or Isky 264 wuith that combo. I run a Comp 264 with a Super 6 and wish I had more.....

Well, MP doesn't sell them any more, but SSD had his new-in-box one "patterned" by Doctor Dodge's favored cam grinder (Elgin Cams) so the MP244 cam is still available.

If you buy a Comp 252 cam, be careful!

Well looks like I migh go for the old 252 comp cam

But can you give me some more details of what and where the problems are with these cams.

What do I look for?

How do I test it?

What should I look for when compairing it to the old cam?

many thanks

See the link I posted above.

Install it in the engine and put the engine in the car. If you happen to get a good one, you're in good shape. If you don't...you're doin' a cam swap.

-DS (I really like the MP244 cam in the 225 in my '62)

OK you are spooking me out with the 252 cam problems, I don't fancy spending $175 for a comp cam only to find that it don't want to work

So what can you tell me about the 244 race cam.

Is this much more of an improvement over the stock 244 cam found in 72 and up motors?

What gains would I see from this cam (in general terms)

Is it worth the effort or should I just rebuilt a 72 up motor and stick with the stock cam.

I'm not trying to win races, I'm just trying to wake up my daily driver.

all advice appreciated.

The Mopar .436 cam had more lift and a little more duration at .050 (207.5 using their formula) with stock overlap, so it would wake it up a little bit while still sounding and idling like a stocker.

I used the last Melling RPD-3 (Hyper Pak) cam in my first slant 18 years ago. After reading all the stuff from Dodge about not using it with an automatic and having at least 3.91 gears, I have to say I was VERY happy that it idled fine in gear with a stock converter and worked just fine with 3.23's. It was actually a very well mannered cam. I'm wondering if anyone has copied it and can grind more - Elgins maybe?

Yep, correct.

H'mmm. Interesting. I've never used an RPD-3, but that is a LOT of camshaft (276°!) and most reports I've read speak of poor running below 1000 rpm, poor low-speed fuel economy, etc.

I will not shop with Clifford. Opinions? Lots of 'em here, and here, and here, and here and here.

OK so Clifford sucks somewhat for various reasons

But is the 252 actually a good cam if you get it all working right?

would it out perform the 244 performance, all things being equal??

My opinion: the MP244 and the Comp 252 are close enough grinds that other engine and equipment factors will have a greater effect on which one runs better. I know that there exist people who have put together good builds with the Comp 252 cam. I've driven some cars equipped with the Comp 252 that ran poorly despite seemingly proper adjustment of all the adjustable factors. Me, personally, I am not going to buy a Comp cam, because I have a philosophical objection to companies that can't be bothered to make sure that at least most examples of any particular one of their products are made correctly. I just don't think they deserve my money.

(Well...that and I suspect that the Comp 252 cam is just a Chevy lobe on a Moapr cam blank, and I have a philosophical objection to that, too!)

That Erson 254° looks interesting. Anyone on here ever run one? About the only question that pops into my mind when I look at the specs is the 0.022" recommended intake tappet clearance. Seems to me it might be kinda noisy underhood at that setting, but maybe something about the lobe ramp requires it.
