 Post subject: Final exhaust question

I have finally scraped up enough money to get the exhaust on my car upgraded. It currently has:

Completely stock 225
Holley 1945 1-barrel
1 7/8 exhaust (stock) from manifold back
stock muffler
2.76 gears

I have been considering a 2 1/4 pipe from the manifold back with a flowmaster muffler (I like noise :wink: ) Will a 2 1/4 pipe have any impact on my performance (hill climbing and acceleration) or is it just a waste of money?

Do the 2 1/4 - it certainly won't hurt anything and will help when you get on it.

Today I was talking to a muffler shop about an exhaust for my turbo slant. I was ready to get a Flowmaster but he said there too much back pressure for a turbo and to use a Magnaflow instead.

I don't have an axe to grind but I think you'll find that there are a good many turbo cars and trucks running Flowmaster mufflers. That he is in a muffler shop doesn't make him an expert.

He dosnt make any more on Magnaflows... He was just speeking the truth, Flowmasters sound good but they dont really that flow well compaired to other high performance mufflers. I wanted to uses one because they are tough mufflers.

Lots of turbo guys won´t touch a flowmaster, and say they make too much backpressure.

I tried to like Magnaflo muflers. Several times. Just couldn't, so I don't use 'em any more. But if you like noise, you might like 'em better than I did!

I don't know how they compare to a Magnaflow, or a flowmaster, but I have a Hemi Charger (real Hemi,ie earlier model) muffler on my truck with 2 1/4 inch tubing,and I have heard that as far as stock replacement mufflers go is the best one to use for low backpressure and sounds really good! I also know the turbo corvair muffler is a good choice,and supposedly is the muffler that the other companies (aftermarket) based their turbo mufflers on in the early eighties.

I have flowmaster on my car, and honestly, I don't like it. It makes a real nice sound at idle, but at about 45-60 mph, its droning is more than unpleasant. I like a good muffler sound, but have been very unhappy with mine. I'd happily get something that doesn't beat up my ears at that range.

This is exactly why I took the Magnaflo off my Lancer after all of about four months. It made a delicious burble at idle, and had a really excellent "rrrap!" when you'd rev it or go up through the gears under heavy throttle (I used to love getting on I-25 at a particular onramp that had a wall along its length—roll down the window, floor the gas, manually shift 1-2-D on the buttons and listen to the Slant-6 Symphony Orchestra!), but it had a drone that would slice right through you at about 50 to 67 mph, which was right where I needed to cruise a lot of the time. I tried adding a resonator, no good, it just had to go.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Loud exhausts on daily drivers are fun for a few weeks, then they can get old in a hurry.

I have Magnaflows and duals on mine. I like it, it's not real loud. You can also try the Dynomax Ultra Flos, I think they're supposed to be about the same as Magnaflows, just cheaper.

Low noise + low backpressure = stock muffler for larger engine than yours. The ordinary off-the-shelf stock muffler for a 318 or 340/360 A-body will flow amply well with a 225.
