So I am out in my garage going over the parts I have gathered to swap out the lean burn computer and carb on my van. I am looking over my freshly painted factory aluminum Super Six intake manifold when I notice a crack in the floor of the manifold directly below the carb area. Upon closer inspection it appears that the manifold has cracked copmpletely through so there is a hole between the exhaust manifold and the intake manifold. :cry:

The only non-computerized carbs I have that are in good shape are a slant six BBD and a Holley 2305, so I need to use a two barrel intake.

I need to use my factory exhaust manifold and I need to use the factory kickdown linkage, and I am low on funds due to a pay cut at the beginning of the year.

So I am looking for some advice. Is it possible to repair this aluminum factory intake? Is it worth it? Should I just get a Offy or Clifford and run an adapter plate?

HELP!!!!!!

That sounds like the aluminum 2bbl I once had. The plenum floor was broken. I thought about epoxy, didn't think it would last with the exh heat just below. Welding seemed to be more than what I thought the intake was worth, so in the trash it went and I replaced it with a cast iron unit.

If you weld it, it will probably soon crack right next to the weld (or elsewhere in that floor "hot spot" area, which is subject to the most extreme thermal cycling). I had a heartbreak story like yours about a decade ago, when I glass beaded an export 2bbl intake P/N 2806816 I had (from a South African '73 Valiant Charger 190 Sports Coupé, a/k/a '71 Demon RHD with factory 190bhp 2bbl 225) to find two cracks in the manifold floor. That was an iron intake; it's much more common to see those cracks in a '79-up lightweight EB-welded aluminum intake.

I'm afraid if you're after a permanent, quality fix, you're in the market for a replacement intake or modification of a 1bbl intake to accept a 2bbl carb, as described in Dave York's article Here. That might actually be your best bet, since it lets you easily keep your 1bbl kickdown (with minor mods), throttle cable, etc.

Yeah, I am looking for a bolt in manifold right now since I don't have the time to fabricate something. It looks like I am in the market for either a replacement factory Super Six or an Offenhauser intake since I need to keep my stock exhaust. I would like to find something aluminum since my van is such a pig, but we'll see what I can find...

my iron 2bbl mani had a crack on the floor too... since I'm not using ex heat riser (got headers) I removed the heat riser thing under the intake and had it tig welded. never another problem again.

It may well work as advertised, but I still think your intake floor's going to crack again. That's a very lightweight piece of aluminum, and after awhile, it just fatigues from the heat blast applied to it.

Using York´s method, is more easy to weld adapter instead of bolt in no?, also as someone said (sorry I don´t remember who) you can use that method to put a 4BBL instead a 2BBL.

But the question is, is a good idea to weld the adapater instead of bolt it?

Well, the aluminum Super Six intake on E-bay just broke $120. Thats about $30 more than what I would pay for a complete Super Six kit. So it looks like tomorrow I will be going to Home Depot to get the raw materials I need to modify one of my extra one barrel intakes into a two barrel....

I I just saw 2 iron 2 bbl manifolds at the local Pick & Pull. I'll be going back in a few days. I'll check to see if there any still there.

Reed I know were there was an aluminum super six intake at a yard I can check it out next weekend. If it is still there I would take $35+shipping.
