I have found another 74 Duster that has an emissions control label (one mounted on fender, tells timing, carb settings,idle speed) on it that I need to go on my car. The one on my car is covered with paint. What would be the best way to remove it from the car without messing it up. If I pull it I'm afraid that it will rip. What would be the best adhesive to reattach it with?

3M makes an tape and stripe remover but I think it removes without regaurd to the tape/stripe.
Try WD40, it's a better solvent than it is a lubricant.
I wouldn't want to use anything stronger for fear of damage to the label.
Reproduction labels are available, that would be the easiest, maybe best, but not the cheapest way to go.

Nobody that I know of makes an emissions decal for a 1974 Slant six.

The Vaccum hose diagram is some sort of plastic so it pulled right off with no problem at all. What adhesive do I use to reattach it with?

i use a li'l bit dangerous procedure but it works fine

I heat it up just mildly with a heater gun, then i gently peel one corner and soak it with zippo fliud or trementine, or any paint solvent that ain't thinner and is proven to not wipe off the decal letters. as I work it softly with a synt scraper with near to razor edge, the solvent does his work and dissolves the goo under the label. This works just fine with plastic decals and if you're extra careful with paper base decals too.

Um, how about paint thinner used to take the paint off of the one on your car? Sounds like removing the sticker from another car is more hassle than it is worth. Just get a glass fof brake fluid or turpentine or paint thinner and some q-tips, mask off the area immediately surrounding the emissions decal on your car with painter's tape, and saturate the sticker with paint stripper and swab it with q-tips. you could even use very fine sandpaper to lightly sand the paint off the top of the sticker.

Those VECI labels (Vehicle Emission Control Information) were produced with highly permanent adhesive. They were meant to stay stuck! Especially after three decades and a few years, I think your odds of getting the decal off intact are poor.

The '74 225 decals aren't being reproduced, but the '73 ones are, and they're identical in format and content except they say "1973" instead of "1974". It would be very easy to buy a new '73 decal, scan it in on a high-quality scanner, change the 3 to a 4, make whatever other changes you wanted to make, and print it out on clear sticker material on a high-quality printer.

Just curious: You need the decal because of your state's emission laws? Or just for underhood appearance?

The only reason why I want it is because it looks nice at car shows. The one on the car now is unreadable because the body shop painted over it . Where do I get a 73 label? No one will ever notice.

I managed to get the vacuum hose routing diagram off of a 75 Duster. I think it looks nice (colorful) so I would like to put it on my car. What kind of adhesive should I use. The loable is made out of some sort of plastic, lot different from the VECI label

Give him a call, he may produce one for you. He has '74 360, 400, 440 and late '60s 225. Although '70s 225 emission decal are low demand, he may produce one for you. Seems to me, all he would need to change are a few #s.

When in doubt, take a really good digital photo - or ten - of the label before you try to remove it, so you can check the data later. Use the macro focus, good diffuse light, etc.
