My wipers have decided to operate on their own, independent of the wiper switch position. They come on by themselves, sometimes as soon as the ignition is switched on.
These are the one-speed wipers in a '64 Valiant.
I haven't had a chance to crawl under the dash yet, and just found the wiring diagram in the factory service manual. Any suggestions where to start when I get time to tinker with it?

Probably a bad wiper switch

I had wipers that did this once, turned out to be a bad ground on the wiper motor. But I don't remember if this was on one of my old A-Bodies or on a K-Car.

Same symptom though, took off running whenever they wanted to!

Normally, when you turn off your wipers they continue the sweep until the park switch inside the motor opens and stops them. If that switch inside breaks, the wipers will keep running as long as there is ignition power. As a kludge, you can disconnect the lead to the internal switch and the motor will stop as soon as the dash switch is turned to off, but in an arbitray position.

The problem is, that they turn themselves on in the first place. When they have stopped on their own, it has been in the proper position. They have a date with the multimeter.

Whre can you buy a new switch for the single speed wipers?

No joy at Rock Auto. I still need to verify the fault before I throw parts at it.

If the internal switch inside the wiper motor is broken and closes intermittantly, it could start your wipers up whenever there is power to the motor (in ACC or RUN).

You can isolate the problem by disconnecting the appropriate pin on the dash switch - leaving the park power to the motor from the switch connected. If the problem disappears, it's probably the dash switch, if it doesn't, it is the switch inside the motor.

You could also disconnect the park pin at the motor; then if it starts up by itself it must be the dash switch.

Here's another kicker. The passenger side wiper on my '62 Lancer always wipes all the way off the side of the car, yet it always returns to it's correct home at the base of the windshield. The driver side is really possessed. It will wipe a small spot from 2-3" above it's rest at the base to straight up and down, or sometimes, all the way from it's rest to off the side car. Is there any adjustment on the motor or linkage? Any recommendations? Exorcism?

Hey -skunk-- your wipers look to have been changed -- they should be the screw on type-- remove them & check the adapter--they most likely have a small nut --holding down a wipper ferrule?-- the nut will come loose-- use locktite & tighten them up. Also they should only be 12" style.

Checked em out. The ferrels & nuts are fine. The slop lies in the linkage beneath the dash.

Sounds like the wiper linkage bushings under the dash have worn out or broke completely. The one's on my 74 are plastic and after 30 or so years they finally get old and come apart. I think your 62 has metal bushings, different from what I have.
