I asked Cometic last spring/summer about tooling and producing a new head gasket for the slant-6, particularly for the aluminum engines, and they said "We're way too busy, ask us in the autumn/winter". The idea I had in mind was a gasket meant for the aluminum engine (max bore 3.44") that could also be used on the iron engine, and could be design-tailored with bigger bores for those building extreme iron engines.

I just got off the phone with them, and here's what needs to happen:

1) They're faxing me a custom gasket request form. I'll fill it out and send it in.

2) Next Monday in their weekly planning meeting, they'll look at the form and decide how to proceed. They may ask to see an original gasket, they may ask for more information regarding the gasket and/or demand for it, they may decide they'll make it but only if someone coughs up the money for 150 gaskets upfront, they may decide they're not interested in the project. 3) If they decide to proceed with the project, they'll want an original gasket, a block and a head. Yes, it'll be a hassle to ship a block, but not a huge hassle. I've UPS'd aluminum 225 blocks across the country before. Maybe someone closer than DD is to OH can send a bare block (which I can't imagine not being returned safely). Head is heavy but still shippable.

The Cometic tech I just spoke to said multiple bore sizes are easily doable, and nine or ten different thicknesses can be provided as well.

If it gets that far, I believe I can supply or get someone on OH to provide an Al block and a head and I have an extra stock Al-engine gasket.

We should emphasize to them that there are probably 30 racers out there who could use a better gasket for the iron engine on a fairly regular basis. The solid copper gaskets are expensive and require o-rings too.

150 orders up front might be tight, but 30-40 should be pretty easy if they're not terribly expensive.

How much are we talking here for 150 of them? 150 total, or 150 of each bore size and thickness?

OK.....if this is gonna get done, I've got an empty aluminum block, stock bore, and a junk iron, bare head, that I could ship to them from Iowa. Anybody closer?

I do also have an old Fel-Pro, unused gasket for the aluminum engine, but I would be a bit squeamish about letting it out of my control without some assurances.

I don't have the capital available to put up for a large quantity of gaskets, though.

I am interested in this project and would by a couple maybe more depending on price. I would want for a 3.500 bore though.

I would also be interested in this project. Would have to work on a iron engine with say 11 to 1 compression. Git er Done Possum

Please Excuse My stupidity Here - but what material are the MLS gaskets made from?


Would it be possible to get a replica of the original Steel Shim Chrysler gaskets in the same stock / compressed thickness?


Would these gaskets be able to work on iron motors that do not have the excessive overbores?

MLS = Multi Layer Steel

Its a 3 layer gaset, one metal layer in the middle - then two outer metal layers that are coated with a sealing material. I haven't had first hand experience - but supposedly they have excelent sealing capability.

well, they are able to seal the head on a neon, and the open decks of a honda. they allow the head and block to move around a bit, independently of each other to help retain a better seal.

Urf. That would be a different project, and one I have no interest in pursuing. Somebody else would need to do that.
Yep, the "aluminum engine" MLS gasket (bore 3.44) should work great on stock and near-stock iron engines.

MLS worked real good on my '97 Neon.
Worked so well, I'll never buy another Chrysler again.
