Hey guys. Can someone tell me what the advantages/disadvantages are to simply using a 2bbl adaptor instead of installing an entire super 6 setup? I was thinking of going that way instead.

your help is appreciated.

Keni

...well, if two barrels get squeezed down into one hole, it's really just a one-barrel still, isn't it? Power does not emanate from the carburetor, all a bigger carb (or cam or valves or ports, for that matter)does is allow more air (and therefore more air:fuel) to flow into an engine. If you run it through the original restriction, you've acomplished nothing.

Welcome to slantsix.org, by the way. :D

Welcome to the board, Keni. Yours is a pretty common question. Please click the red text to see this recent thread on the subject. Short answer: Adaptors are a poor choice.

thank you for the advice. Much appreciated.

Now that I'll be going with the 2BBL "super six" intake manifold, can you steer me to a thread on the proper exhaust manifold? Some say you can use my existing factory one. But its a 71 and the choke pocket would have to be cut. I think thats beyond my abilities.

So if I find or buy another ehaust, is there something i should look for to improve performance. exp a dual exahust or is there a single exhaust that allows for a larger head pipe opening?

thanks again.
Keni

If you have access to a grinder, or a dremel tool with a cut-off attachment, or even a plain old hacksaw, you cut cut the pocket on your 71 exhaust manifold. Al of these tools should be availabel for rental form your local rental store.

You're right, the '70-'72 exhaust manifold with its open-top choke stove cannot be used with the factory-type 2bbl choke, even if you were to cut it (which would ruin it—the cutting trick only works on '60-'69 exhaust manifolds). If your choke cup is in good shape and seals the top of the manifold (gasket notwithstanding, if yours is blown you can get or make a new one), the path of least cost and effort will be to go to the electric choke retrokit. Even if you were to use a '73-up exhaust (onto which would bolt the factory 2bbl choke thermostat), the electric choke kit offers several advantages: It's very much more adjustable than the factory ones, and all the parts are new.

All the exhaust manifolds have the same outlet size (roughly 2") so there's no advantage there, either.

The best exhaust manifold upgrade route is a set of Dutra Duals—better than headers!

As far as headpipe size: 2¼" was the factory's choice for the single headpipe on 2bbl-equipped engines, and is an excellent aftermarket choice if you're upgrading while keeping the single exhaust.

...thereby creating an enormous and permanent exhaust leak and ruining the manifold completely. Remember, '70-'72 exhaust manifolds have an open choke stove, not a pocket.
