Man, I don't know what has gotten into me, lately. I'm actually working on the car, and getting something acomplished. Worked on the replacement head, over the weekend. It did have bronze guides and teflon seals. The valves and seat were still in excellent condition. I cut the step off the spring seat for dual springs, and cut the guides shorter for the higher lift cam ( I now have room for .600 lift). While I was doing this and cleaning parts, I decieded to try my valve refacer. Didn't need to reface the valves, but did do a "backcut" on them. Assembled the head with a set of Crane small block Mopar dual springs and retainers, which I had "in stock". Tonight I got the "E-bay" head off the engine. Hope I have enough time and ambition, to install the new head tomorrow nite. Before removeing the head, I did a compression check, and had from 145-155 PSI. I wonder how much improvement a jump from 8.2 to 10.0 compression will be.

I'd be interested in those compression numbers too.

New head is on, along with the intake and headers. Had to do some grinding on the flange of the headers, by #1 and 6 ports. The flange hit the pads on the block. Also did a little grinding on the pads.
Pushrods might work as is, but the adjusters are pretty much all the way, backed out. Rather then go for shorter pushrods, I am going to try using small block rocker shaft shims, to raise the rocker shaft a little. That might give me the small amount of extra adjustment, I would feel comfortable with. I removed some shims, from a friend's motor, when I converted it to adjustable rockers, so I will get the shims from him, tomorrow.

Thats too bad ya only got 1 run in charlie sounds like a good run though. I put my dist. back together i just changed a spring until i get time to shorten the slots i gotta find my butter zone of timing again and it should be good. Hopefully that compression makes a nice improvement i would suspect you'll be happy with that still

Well, I got the shims, and installed them between the rocker shaft and the stands. I feel like this is a good option, when milling a head and the pushrods wind up being a little too long. It is a lot easier and cheeper then custom pushrods. Due to the geometry of the rocker arms, I only needed .030 shims. Also if I had used a aftermarket composition head gasket, I think I would have been OK, but I used a steel shim gasket.

Another thing to keep in mind, when milling a lot off the head is the holes in the alternator bracket may not line up. I just used a die grinder and elongated the upper hole in the bracket. Still have a few more thing to do, till I fire it up.

Fired up the engine, and got the valves adjusted. I had to get some new plugs (NGK B9ES gapped at .032). The new head is a drool tube unit, the old one was a late style. Planning on hitting the track tomorrow nite 4-26-08. Lets hope for a couple of tenths from the added compression.

The engine liked the added compression. Got 4 runs in. Only 1/8 mile runs, tonight.
60 ft ....1.739, 1/8...8.220, mph...80.95 hot and humid
............1.734, ........8.238, .........80.78 hot and humid
............1.699, ........8.483, .........73.94, cooler temp, but low on nitrous
............1.678, ........8.108, .........81.30, cooler , and new bottle.
Biggest problem is, seeing the tree, at night. The windshield is pretty fogged, and small scratches. Between taht and how hard tis car leaves, I am getting a lot of red lights. Stay tuned for the next chapter. :D

Still using my old fixed plate. I think it is 100hp. Going to try and get your adjustable plate on sometime this week.

Well, I installed Slantzillas adjustable nitrous plate, in addition to my fixed plate, with intentions of launching the car as before, then using a manual pushbutton to fire the 2nd stage, down track. Went to Farmington Dragway in North Corolina, and did a Fri nite TnT. Made 4 runs on the 1st stage only, and the engine was missfiring. Couldn't find the problem. The only change was the addition of the spacer, and 2nd nitrous plate. I removed the complete 2nd stage parts, and tried again on Saturday. Still had the missfire. So I had to run eliminations, on motor only. Was not able to try for a new "C" nitrous 1/8 mile record.
Best run of the weekend, on motor was 60 ft 1.869, 9.11 at 73.619 mph
This was also the best ever on motor.

Just got a unused reman Nipondenso starter for the car, for $20 from a yard sale. Someone bought it for $10 at the yard sale, without knowing what it fit. They were in the parts store, checking the numbers for application. When it showed up as a 98 dodge PU with a 5.7/5.2 engine, I offered to let him double his money, and we did the deal.
