It would have to make ridiculous and insane HP above and beyond any other slant in history has ever made to be cost effective.

UMMM I have never heard the phrase "Cost Effective" when chasing HP... Its always been "How fast does your money want to go?"... just sayin.....

Well, most racers have a realistic concept of how much a given part should improve their performance. For instance, the Ford equivalent of the billet head costs about $8000 bucks just for the bare CNC ported head, then around $3500 for the valvetrain, $3000 for the Hogan sheetmetal intake, then headers and a custom valve cover. Dont get me wrong. its neat and trick and if he picks up a couple of seconds off his previous ET with it im sure many others might consider it. But if it only picks him up a few tenths of a second. I doubt there will be a line forming for others the get one.

This thread has been fascinating. There are a lot of basic nuggets buried here. Dont stop typing.

IF it picks up a few tenths I'm sure a lot of people will want one. The iron heads are maxed out as far as what you can do with them.

True; they are not going to flow much more air, but they seem to like about 25 pounds of boost... :)

I'd love to mount my turbo and header on that motor and drop it in the TOAD and see what it could do

Mark,

It would probably run in the 8s in your featherweight car!!! That would be a HOOT! :)

The person who sold me my Dodge truck this week is an engineer who has prototyped and built casting. He said that casting complex parts is not as difficult as it seems if you are willing to learn and make mistakes. He said there are still some foundries that will work with the little guy. One of the parts that he cast commercially was DeSoto hemi intake manifolds. His father is a pattern maker and taught him the ropes. It helps if you have a big budget but many of the skills don't require a huge investment. He built the Denso mini starter to Mopar flathead six adapter for my Dodge truck. He stopped production because of costs, the suppliers want to deal in thousands of units, you can go broke if you can't sell the stuff. But for one-off projects, I wouldn't discount what a dedicated man can do in his shop. He is the reason that my flathead six sounds like a Honda when it cranks.

Now that I'm back from my road trip with Chase I'll touch base with Howard to see how close he is to any testing. I know he will have the engine on a dyno and will have everything squared away before it ever goes in the car.

That might not work so well... Howard likes LOTS of compression! He also likes LOTS of RPM!! :D

Cost effectiveness and mass production were two things I can assure you were not considered in this project. Howard wanted to do this for years and finally decided that "now was the time". It's a "One Off" type deal made the way HE wants it. He's a pretty realistic guy and isn't looking for any two second gains by doing this.

I think he'd like to improve on his C/Alcohol record from 2009 (11.27 @114 MPH) though...

Rob, see if you can sqeeze some flow #'s out of him about how good it flows compared to a ported stock cylinder head casting. As I was trying earlier to show a comparative cost of what others might have to spend to have a billet head of their own, if they can't make one themselves. Many racers expectation of gain is directly proportional to how much they spend for a certain part, so at close to $10K if not more, many guys/gals are going to expect a tremendous gain. And for that chunk of change, a couple of tenths isn't a tremendous gain for the money spent.

Post subject:  Howard's Happy!!... :-)

Howard gave me a call this evening...

The engine has been on the dyno and he is "pleased with the results"...

Just a couple random numbers to spur additional conversation:

5,000...

1.6...

Everything's a "Go", so the engine is off to get a custom diaper made...

Car is all ready and has been for quite awhile, just waitin' on the engine. :D

It's getting very, very close now...

If initial track testing goes well he will be putting the Clay City race on his calendar. :D :D

We need some phone calls to folks like Barry Harrison, Mark Goodman, Mike Jeffrey, Will Burns, Charles Meyers, the Cox Brothers...

Let's have a reunion at the Clay City race and run a "Fast Four" competition!! :D

5,000- How much the head cost!

1.6....-Amount of HP gained! :P

I was thinking 5000 rpm

and 1.6 rocker arm ratio

Post subject:  My guess

1.6 = Horse Power per Cubic inch? Would mean 360 Hp at 225 ci. Or 380 Hp at 238 ci.
