I already have some nice, NOS, 225 stocker rods and was starting to shop for pistons when this thread started. Haven't had any luck finding forged pistons for those or a set of 198 rods. Would prefer to use stronger/lighter rods and pistons if/when this deal solidifies. Doc's approach sounds reasonable to me as well. 9.0-9.5:1 CR (10.0 at max) is about what I'm looking for. |

I just got a set of Ross forged pistons for 6.7" rods that have thick tops for nitrous. +.100" over with a thin ring pack. They would have been in the $60ish range until we moved the pin hole. Venolia or Diamond probably would have been cheaper. I tried to get a set of 6.7" rods out of Tom and was told "No", so I guess I'll just "cobble together" another stock rod rocket motor.

Venolia was $60 per piston when I called them. But like 'Zilla said as soon as you start moving stuff the price jumps. Either way, a nice custom rod would be nice. Can you let us know if this project is still being worked on by Tom and if there is an ETA? I don't care about pistons because I'm using them for a turbo application, I need to know final dimensions so I can design a piston. |

For me, the concern is spending all the $$$ to make the product cost effective, available and still make a reasonable profit.Lets run some numbers... (This is hypothetical - NOT "REAL" NUMBERS) So I negotiate great deals on 10 sets of custom con rods and pistons, lets say they cost me $60.00 each. So 60 con rods and 60 pistons = 120 parts x $60.00 each = $7,200.00 I have to pay to get the parts. (who has that cash "kicking around"?) Now the question is, what is my time and money worth?? I mark-up the sets by 20% so the price is now $864.00 plus shipping. How long will it take for me to sell the 10 sets that cost the customers close to $900.00 per set? The honest answer is... we don't know and I think that is why businesses, like Tom's... have trouble with these kind of projects. DD |

Have him take a deposit and the serious folk would do that. It would eliminate the tire kickers. This would tell him his immediate universe. |

Well, at first I told Tom to make this work for him and us to make the piston/rod combo to work with thw stock block as Doc said. If someone wanted less compression 9.5 or so the can get it valve relives and if one wanted 11.1 they can get a slite dome all based on the same piston(if possible). The math I came up with for me is 9.8 to 10.1 with a flat top. I told Tom that to sell these a person that would pull his engine on friday, slap in these rods/pistons and be on the road monday type deal would be best. To be as simple as possible that anyone can do it. The example I gave is not smart without machineing and measuring but you get theidea behind it. This is like a hi-po stock rod idea and 7.1 rod cuts out the ease of someone that really wants/has to use 2.2 pistons or build a normal 198. Tom went with 7.0 because thats what everyone here wanted. And what if tom carries this set up or Wiesco? dierct ordering from them cuts out anyone having shell out that type of money. |

I'm sorry guys if we do stay cheap as Josh said never can we get what we need or want. After this I give up. I'll start looking for a small block if this slant is a toad after the thosands of dollars. Remember WE dictate our presants in the market place. I spoke with the editor of mopar muscle to entertain the I dea of a slant build off. He said every one wants V-8's and there is not enough intrest in the slant.SO at this point the slant footprint is preatty much now a chrysler history article. But in truth we can change this and I try everyday. peace out............ |

I think that there is some serious misunderstangs going on. This is a forum for discussing ideas so when I questioned the need of "superior quality metals" I was simply asking to be talked into them. If my 225 hits 400 flywheel hp I will be completly estatic and can pull that off with re-con rods. BUT my build is a turbo/E85 peaking out a 16:1 compression (at least untill I am sick of replacing head gaskets  ) and would like the security of only building the bottom end once. So I am interested in rods and pistons. I was just asking questions to prove to my self that I need to drop a grand on the pieces.I'm still subscribing to this thread. I'll need to rebuild the block this year so I need to gather some parts soon. |
