Adding Lightness!!
Colin Chapman would be proud...
I took all four doors off ToadRacer yesterday so I can add some lightness to them as well. I'll do a before/after comparison.

I adjusted both bands on the transmission and reinstalled the Valve body and the pan with the new, "fancy" metal reinforced pan gasket. Adjusted the shifter cable and tested to make sure the neutral safety works and it starts in Park and Nuetral. Filled with fluid and topped off. I'm gonna pull the driveshaft and take a look at my U-joints and try and figure out my vibration at about 90 MPH. If I don't find anything obvious, then I am going to have the shaft checked for balance. I plan to be ready to race by the end of February. Our local track will open early March and I want to be ready to go.

While getting ready to pull the driveshaft a grabbed it and tried to shake it back and forth and see if there was any play. Much to my surprise I could see the U-joint cap moving in the yoke! Yes the yoke had brand new straps and the bolts were tight. So that was not good! Luckily I had another 10 spline yoke laying on the shelf and I went ahead and installed it. With the new yoke the U joint was tight in the saddle and the clips were tight inside the yoke also. Then up at the transmission I found all 4 bolts had worked loose in the flex plate. This was a brand new convertor, new bolts and new heavy duty flex plate. All put together with lock tight and they still came loose. So I went ahead and ordered new grade 8 , 7/16" NFT bolts with the heads drilled. Tie wire will eliminate the loose bolt for good. These two items together would have surely been enough to cause my vibration. Bolts will be here tomorrow and once I get them installed I'll take her for a run and see!

I have had both the crank and torque converter bolts come loose over the years!! |

Quote: How much did you overtorque them? Way more than they would call for. I generally tighten them until the engine turns over with wrench and then wack them a couple times with a small hammer for a little extra. |

FYI about the new bolts. Most flex plate bolts have thin heads. I would imagine the drill heads would need to be thicker. Be sure to check and make sure the heads don't hit the block. |

I could not keep the converter bolts tight in my '66. I have not had one loosen up on the '68 ever. Same converter, different motor/trans. |

Well a big truck stopped by the shop on Friday and unloaded 2 large boxes. Wonder what they could be??? New hood and trunk lid arrived and the boxes were in good shape. I told the driver we would unpack them before signing for them and he was good with that (He sounded like a car guy too). Hood looked fine but the trunk lid that they sent was for a 64 Valiant. Not good! So Ryan called the VFN folks and they told him that 63-66 all used the same deck lid. No sir, I'm terribly sorry but you are wrong.  So after holding for about 10 minutes for the production supervisor, they decided that they do not have a trunk lid for a 65. So we had to reject it and they hauled it back to the factory. I got it home and looked at it a bit to see how I plan to fasten it. Probably will end up hinged at the back with no springs of course and a set of pins at the front.
