Yes, it will work. I would try and make sure that its a rebuilt nippondenso, not a cheap copycat because apparently lots of mimmicks are coming from overseas.

Be careful with the eBay starters; virtually all of them advertised with a buy-it-now price of $70 or $80 or so are Chinese copycat shît that won't work well or last long.

Yes, the V8 starters also work on the slant-6.

The grinding phenomenon is a failing starter drive unit.

As pointed out on the mini starter thread a few below this one, you can find $70 rebuilds using oem parts on ebay that specifically say they are rebuilt oem nippondenso's not cheap imitations.

one more thing.
gear reduction and mini starters are they the same thing? i know someone who said you have to heat wrap gear reduction starters.
i said if they are both the same thing then i think its a bunch of bull****.
im not sure.

No they are not the same thing. Both the original mopar starters and the nippon denso starters use a 4:1 gear reduction but are 2 different starters but interchangable for our slants.

You don't need to wrap them for heat protection unless your exhaust comes very close to it, gear reduction or not.

ok, i think i figured out the problem.

I read if you crank over the starter at below 9 volts it damages them. I believe my volt regulator is going out, the volt on my meter isnt stable.

I agree about the poor quality of rebuilt parts these days. I have bought starters that are dead off the shelf. Now I take my starters and alternators to an independent rebuilder. They always work and the cost (here) is about the same, maybe a bit more if there is lots wrong with it. I definitely recommend that route. Also, if you suspect overheating, make sure that there are no exhaust leaks between the manifolds and around the pipe flange. A little leakage there will ruin a starter in no time as it "cooks" the enamel coating over the internal windings.
