Dennis, I'm on my third converter

The first one I'm not sure what the threads were originally when I heli-coiled them. After those gave out, my second converter came stock coarse thread, un-molested by me, from the rebuilder ;) The converter I just picked up is my third.

Thanks for your help buddy, you get a cookie. *sigh* time to leave for work. Waaaaaah I dun wanna go!

I checked 8 flexplates with transfer punches. Some had holes 21/64 dia, 11/32, and 25/64. The 21/64 should be for a 5/16 bolt. The 11/32 also should be for a 5/16 bolt but a sloppier fit. The 25/64 should be for a 3/8 bolt. I have no idea what year or trans/converter the flexplates are from, except they are all slantsix. Some are large pilot and some are small.

There is no such thing as a 3/8" bolt converter is there? I've only seen 5/16" and 7/16" bolts. The catalogue the transmission shop had only 1 listing for a six cyl, 1960+

Charlie, push comes to shove and I can't find the right flexplate, are you willing to sell the 21/64" one? I'd need it to match a 71 crank, can't remember if it was the large or small snout. I'm not going to chance putting this flexplate on and having to redo everything, now that I know there are plates with 21/64" holes.

I have never seen a converter with 7/16 bolts. All the stock mopar converters, I have here are 5/16. The race converters, I have are 3/8, and I am pretty sure mopar had some HP converters with 3/8 bolts.

If you need it, let me know what size crank you have, and I will check the plate.

Charlie, its the bigger style since it is a stock 71. Thanks for your efforts.

They are availible locally and even dealer but the problem is order, not in stock, and the books only show 10" diameter bolt pattern they don't show what bolt hole diameter is. They are only ~$10 so I may take a gamble but if you have ones that are large snout, 21/64" bolt hole diameter I'll give you a few bucks for it so I can have spares.

GAH! So I pull the transmission today, pull out the old converter, and put it side by side with the rebuilt one I just got from the shop.

Noticed the head on the drain plug of the rebuilt one was rounded a bit on one corner, so I decided to take it out and put in my old one. Hmm... why is the new one bigger then the old one? Remove the old one.. ummm, its not supposed to come out in two turns. Well lookie here, the threads on the plug were stripped, and there were NO threads in the hole. Looks like the rebuilder drilled it out and expected the plug to tap its own threads.

The thing may of leaked had I assembeld it all back together and started the car up.

I have one large pilot flex plate with 11/32 convertor holes, on a 10 B.C.

Just for info: Stock converter bolts are 5/16 x 24 thread, 1/2 inch long, grade 8, with a head thickness of 3/16. The thin head is required, so the head does not hit the back of the block. As stated previously, some race converters use 3/8 fine thread bolts.
The flex plate to crank bolts are 7/16 x 20 thread, 1/2 inch long, grade 8, with a head thickness of 1/4 inch. A bolt with a thicker head might hit the converter. All of these bolts should be installed with blue locktite.
