How much of a performance upgrade would you see by swapping in a larger exhasut but keep the 1-barrel?

My car has 2.76 gears and it is the exact opposite of yours. It's not very quick until it hits 45 and then it really starts to haul ass. Does 100 easy but drinks gas.

All this slant 6 performance talk is nice, and I like /6 power, else I wouldn't be here....

but...

It just seems to me those talking about a one barrel /6 "hauling ass" just haven't had the opportunity to drive a really bad-assed big-block or built small block equipped car. It's all relative, but the idea of a 1 barrel stock cam /6 "hauling ass" is just plain silly. By all means, build a 6 if you want to be different, and there are those here with some really haulin' ass race sixes, but on a budget, if being different or unusual is not a prime directive and just simply going like a bat outta hell is, I advise going with a V8.

Actually I have had the opportunity to drive a big block equipped truck. My dad has a 73 Ford F-150 with a 460. It too hauls ass (holds you back in the seat). And don't forget that my truck has a 400 in it that can burn both back tires at will (who sez 400s are weak).

What I meant about my Duster is that it has plenty of top end power. It pulls strongly up the hills and passing people is not a problem. It's just not very good around town.

My friends will tell you my wagon hauls ass!
It has spanked it's share of v8s.

When I was in college and my '64 Valiant Signet was new, 225 engine with A833 4 speed and exhaust cutout, I could beat 292 Fords, 261 Fairlanes, and 265 (2bl) Chevies. It turned consistent 17.6/76mph quarter mile times. I was beaten about 2 carlengths by a '54 New Yorker four door sedan battleship with 331 hemi, however. I think those times and speeds for a 1 bl completely stock 225 were very respectable. The car seemed to run like a small V8, though the later 273 2bl V8's (180 hp) were faster. My car had a 145hp rating. If I had only waited six more months "I coulda had a V8". MY current project is still progressing, the 225 engine is bored, but the heads and cam, etc are not yet addressed. It'll have the Offy 4bl manifold and Eddy 500 Performance 4 bl with electric choke and dual Dutra duals and two separate exhausts to the rear bumper. I think it ought to do well in my '62 Signet. We'll see in a couple months or so.

...as has my /6 Duster, but I still don't consider it "bad ass". Mid-fifteens will dust quite a few stock V8's, but even a mildly warmed up 318 in a Duster would easily clean my clock. The fun about running a /6 is doing more with a lot less, but truly "bad ass /6" is a pretty exclusive club, and they are pretty much dedicated race cars.

I think so too :) We need to have a bone-stock /6 racing series!

Stiil did'nt answer my question, will swapping in a larger exhasut while keeping the 1-barrel improve performance any?

17's are damn good for a stock slant. Says a lot about the driver too. I can only manage 16's in my F-150 because I can't get it to hook up off the starting line.

Yes, alarger exhaust system helps a 1bbl Slant, especially the ones the the dinkey 1 3/4 - 1 1/2 system. (smaller tailpipe)

The "performace" is felt in off idle and low speed power, seeing the small carb. runs out of CFM at about 2800 RPM.

How do you figure that?

Upgrading your exhaust to a larger size will absolutely help your performance.I think I went to a 2.25".Be ready to step up a couple sizes on the main jet if you experience a slight bog off the line. This was my experience back in the day when I started with the 1bbl 225.

Good luck
