No need to be persnickety. The point here -- the takeaway lesson -- is that not everything you read is true, and in this case what you read flatly isn't, for it doesn't jibe with the way camshafts actually work. Shorter overlap = smoother idle at lower speeds. Same as the other thing you said, about Canada being an "export" market, which it wasn't and isn't. I'm sure you read it somewhere, but it is nevertheless untrue.

The 244°/244°/26° cam was adopted in the domestic-market for '71 for NOx control across the whole RPM range and better mid-high RPM power. Not for better idle.

Y'wanna know how I know that I'm right on this one? OK: I asked the man who was Chrysler Corp's head engine engineer for many decades, including the slant-6's entire lifespan. His name's at the top of the list on the Slant-6 engine patent, and he wrote the 3-volume History of Chrysler Corporation's Slant-6 Engine. I was eating dinner with him and his wife in the dining room of their Michigan home. At the time, he was working on the Slant-6 history, and one of the things we specifically discussed over dinner that night was camshaft changes through the years.

That's what is known as a primary source.

70 Valiants opinion on camshaft timing/ idle quality makes as much sense to me as yours....regardless of who he had dinner with.

Try to at least feign respect for others.....just try.

70 Valiant: I have had idle quality improved by camshafts with increased overlap. It may be due to decreased cylinder pressure at low RPMs. Another thought would be improved mixture quality by better purging the cylinder of combustion gases.

dudes hear is the inside scoop for the perfect carb for the super 225 go to pepboys ask for a champion reman 14-143 this carb is i believe for a 72 volare 2bbl super 6 all the proper jets and settings ever since i put this on my 65 cuda 225 with 3sp 904 20mpg fway and runs like a top lotsa tourque and top end when they looked up the price whoa 65 bucks with 5 buck core 318 carbs not set for 225s this is a whole new driving experience we go everywhere mopar or no car

...which does not occur at low RPMs with increased camshaft overlap. In fact, the opposite occurs. That's why cams with very high overlap idle so poorly. The effect is still present whenever the overlap is increased over whatever baseline, it's just that there's plenty of room to increase overlap from super-tiny levels (the 8° or 16° of the '60 and '65 camshafts, respectively) to moderately-small levels (the 26° of the '71 camshaft) without objectionably roughening the idle. That said, it's interesting to note the increases in specified engine idle speed that coincided with each increase in camshaft overlap, isn't it?

BUT, we're way off topic here with the idea that the '70 camshaft is causing the original poster's rough idle. It's probably not, since he says the rough idle, poor mileage and subpar power appeared after he changed to the 2bbl carburetor. That means the problem is likely in the carburetor or the 2bbl intake he swapped on. Some possible causes of rough idle, poor mileage and lack of power with a swapped-on 2bbl setup include:

* Carburetor faults (worn throttle shaft/bushings, internal gunk, improper adjustment, etc.)

* Vacuum leaks: Carb to manifold, manifold to head, manifold itself (if aluminum)

* Exhaust leaking into intake tract via EGR passages or via crack in floor of intake (seen these cracks happen in both iron and aluminum intakes).

I thought the cam used in the '71-up engines came from the 225 Marine engine? Was this cam also used in other markets (like Europe, South America and Austraila) before it was used in the North American market in '71?

Yep, the 244°/244°/26° cam originated as a factory marine cam in the mid '60s. Its next use was in the E27 engine (225 2bbl), available starting in 1967 outside North America. This engine saw extensive use in Australia, South Africa, Central and South America and Mexico. In those markets, engines with the 1bbl carb still came with the 240°/236°/16° cam. In 1971, all road vehicle and industrial slant-6s got the 244° cam, regardless of market or carburetion.

All three stock cams will give good idle quality if the rest of the engine is in good shape and proper tune.

This experience is just like joining vegas mopars real excitement getting together with like minded mopar fanatics then getting told to leave the oil leakers at home when getting together at functions or hearing certain cars not being allowed because of certain modifications or potential new members being denied acceptance cause of spinning their wheels at a meeting or admonishing a fellow mopar enthusiast for bad grammer when trying to assist a person from getting the most enjoyment from the only real choice of cars. rebelrods coming soon real rods real people real life.
