My '64 measures 2-1/2" from the face of the waterpump to the radiator. I'm not sure I'd trust a fan operating within a 1/4" from the fins. Is mine especially close?

AFAIK, all automotive engines are CW rotation. The only counter-rotating engines are for twin screw marine applications.
All common automotive engines are CW rotation as viewed from the accessory end (front), BUT virtually all engine-driven fans nowdays rotate CCW as viewed from the front because they're driven by the outside of the serpentine belt. Those fans and their clutches won't swap onto older engines (and usually the mounting setup is incompatible too, but not always). Look at any Ram, Dakota, or Durango with a Magnum engine made since 1992 to see what I mean. Same is true for most GM and Ford apps as well.

Ok, the fan blades have the identical slant to them it is the proper rotation fan.

Also I have been driving around for 3 days now with no ill effect, including LA city traffic.

I measured with out the spacer. I have a hair under 3" between pulley and radiator.
