From my experience, a common problem was that backfires could crack in the nose of the starters
and the clutch would break,
Ive noticed that too in a lot of forklifts, and the mfr of a few makes have come up with "ignition delay" modules (the simplest being a 1/4 sec. delay timer mounted in series with the coil positive feed from the keyswitch), which allows the starter to fully engage and rotate the engine a little before turning on the coil. This way, the engine wont kick back and give the nosecone that weird loading that breaks it. Electro.sonic should have a delay timer you could wire in to solve that problem. Ive used them a few times while I was at Liftow.
