Thanks for the smile, Dan. :)

Stepon, this conversation is veering in a direction I'm not really wanting to follow for very far, but I will oblige you for a bit. The one thing you must understand (and the reason I started this thread in the first place, almost 4 years ago) is because I had found an easy solution to a problem my 16-year old son and I faced when trying to decide what to do about the sound system in his very first car. With limited funds, limited resources, very limited experience in car restoration, and absolutely no knowledge of sound imaging, we came up with the only way we knew how to locate two small speakers in the front half of his car to make use of his new radio (and keep it appearing stock) - to replace the deteriorated paper single-cone 4"x10" dash mounted speaker.

Using the only methods, tools, and materials I had at hand in my shop, I made the bracket to simply suit our needs. After posting this thread to illustrate to others what can be done to solve what I would consider to be a typical problem with these old cars, I began to get a few inquiries by other members. I assumed they liked what they saw and they figured it would serve their needs. I also surmised that some folks don't have access to a workshop with the necessary tools to make their own bracket.

I'm sure the products you provided reference to would function quite well in this application. And yes, plastic versions of what I make from roughly 0.080" sheet aluminum will probably be cheaper, but I think I'll leave that decision to those who must choose between the two options.

As for your altruistic endeavor to help me with development of this product, I sincerely thank you, but my R&D ended with the first successful installation in my son's car. It is what it is. I'm satisfied with the results, as well as my son, the end user.

lol, did you respond to this post as you were reading it? i am actually responding to suggestions to mount speakers in kickpanels or under the dash...
If that's the case, then I misunderstood - I took what you said at face value and I didn't pick up on how quickly you changed topics...

...mounting plate to flex and create distortion. i would recommend reinforcing those mounting plates with angle bracket.

the problem with firing a midrange or tweeter in a direction away from your ear is that high frequency...
Then, I missed your second gear change back to the original topic...

...fires as directly at your face as possible. there was a company called "audioforms" ten or so years ago that sold door pods that would do this.

for stereo sound your cheapest and best option for cutting-in speaker grilles would be the steel filler panel at the top of the dash...
Oh, by the way, if you are interested, $27 will get one of my brackets to your door in Canada, and $26 for anyone else in the lower 48. :D
