Good stuff, Craig. If I get to the office tomorrow (A/C being replaced at the house) I'm going to trawl through the Echlin catalogue and see what goodies I can dig up. If I find anything juicy, I'll make another one of these posts.

Seems to me some vehicles used a pulse generator that screwed directly to the transmission in place of the speedometer cable in the era that electronic speedometers were being phased in. Also check for this type of signal generator on medium duty trucks.

Some time ago searched for "pulse generator" or "signal generator" on Ebay and found some similar to that gone I got from Rostra. They were for car applicatoins in the 70's era suprisingly. Can't find any there this evening however.

Need to find a place that caters to speedometer parts, pieces, and adaptors. I'm sure they must have generic signal generators.

Dan,
What did you find?

I don't know if this part on an 80's Imperial is a signal generator - they call it a Speed Sensor. the speedo cable from the cruise unit mounts to the speed sensor and another cable mounts from it to the speedometer gear. I would suspect it's one and the same.

Yep, that's a signal generator. They call it the same on my 1987 truck. However, don't confuse the speed/distance sensor/signal generator with the "maintenance reminder" switch that looks similar and is also mounted in the speedometer cable on some cars.

Well, this fishing expedition was a lot shorter and easier than I anticipated. Looks like there's one good candidate available over the counter at NAPA, the Echlin VSS232, about $43:

Here's a question: Anyone know which vehicle this is originally made for, and what the pulse-per-mile on it would be for a Dart? VDO says their speedos can be manually calibrated if you can figure out the right pulse-per-mile for the sender on your vehicle.
