hey Greg, can you give some info about the heim joint strut rods we see...

and... are those the early or late model Viper calipers?

Early viper calipers. I got them used from EBay, with pads for around $300. The strut rods are from http://www.reillymotorsports.com/, Bill Reilly. He turned out to be a true pleasure to work with. Good stuff, really good service when I had a problem. I will let you know how they work out.

Post subject:  I got tags on it, and drove it to work
Well, the Barracuda is on the road. I was delayed by a differential that was bad. I got a new ford 8" third member with posi from EBay, and installed it. Here I am driving it to work this morning Image

It is really running well ( need to up the idle a bit), and the handling is really quite good. I folllowed the Tom Condran cookbook, with significant inspiration taken from Lou and others. Thanks for all the help from everybody on this.

Things to do
  • Figure out why it is pulling slightly when I brake
    Up the warm idle a little
    Check all my nuts and bolts for tightness
    chase down a brake light gremlin
    vacumn the interior
    fix the gas gauge for the 10th time.
Next year: Silver state classic!

Thanks for the compliment, VM. It smells like a combination of mice droppings and cardboard pinetree airfresher on the inside, plus the carpet is shot, so I wouldn't get too envious.

Juan, the K frame is just a standard one that has been boxed up, and powder coated. I got it from Firm feel.

Hmmm ... It'd be a long trip, but how about the Big Bend Open Road Race www.bborr.com or Road Runner Open Road Race www.rrorr.net, both based in Fort Stockton, Texas? Very friendly, well run, and lots of fun. Plenty of room to open up the slant, with more turns!

You'd have at least one courseworker cheering you on.

I have heard of the big bend event. It sounds a little more intimidating. I am not ruling it out, though. Let me get the SSC under my belt, and understand what I am doing first.

Here is my drive to work. This is why I was really interested in getting the handling and braking figured out.

I remember being intrigued by your commute after chatting on the phone and having a look on Google Earth.
Whats the total vertical and whats your average/steepest grade? \
....and you didnt think 9" drums were up to this?

My local killer road (gravel) is 22%max 10% average... 16kms / 5000ft total climb....way killer with 6" of snow....

The local highway is max 13% grade...slowest corner 20km/hr. Ranked #1 motorcycle highway in Canada. (BC highway 6)

Ive driven the SSC highway.....(average 145/km/hr on cruise) I bet your Barracuda could average 105- 115 mph...plenty scarey.

I am not sure what the max and average grades are, but it does go from less than 1000' above sea level to about 4500' above sea level, and the tightest corner is a 25 MPH blind corner. I have seen 3 really bad head on accidents in this corner, where somebody crosses the centerline.

Sandy, I really would not want to try the 9" drums on this. No way.
