P.S. Did you see where I put the 1/2 inch wrench?
I'm not really missing any tools, I was only mocking my total lack of organization and scattered brain.

Glad to hear it's running better.

After thinking about your car for a day, I seem to recall hearing that models without a charcoal cannister vented the carb into the crankcase. I guess that's what that tube was, but I didn't expect it to enter through the fuel pump. There's always something new to learn.

I lapped in a new exhaust valve last night and it looks really good! I think we should plan on getting you some replacement exhaust valves and rebuild a head for your car some weekend. NEW valves should seal much better and you should feel even more improvement. Maybe we'll merge it with the super six project if you can afford the parts.

It doesn't have anything to do with ASE certs or college degrees - there are morons with both, and neither really proves anything other than you can study and take tests. I think a person's intelligence and skill stands or falls on its own merits rather than what kind of certificate, patch or degree that person can point at. My concern is that the automotive maintenance profession is drawing progessively fewer intelligent people, and I mean skilled people and craftsmen with problem solving skills, not "book smarts".

Not that I give a rats ass anymore but I have 7 trades tickets including a BC and Alberta Automotive Tech ticket,,,,same as ASE certified I suppose. The guys who do the service on my business vehicles are also journeymen.

When you have a business it is important to regularly audit anything you do. Although I do a lot of the automotive service and repair around here (and am ticketed to do it) it is extremely important to have competent ticketed people audit that work. Believe me, I also audit theirs.

Last winter I had a DoT inspector drive into our yard and demand ID and to inspect our vehicles. I made him take his Durango out to the road and made him show me his ID. I asked him what certification he had to inspect my vehicles. "I took a course" sez he. "how long was the course?" sez I...."6 weeks" sez he.

I told him I used to teach a course that was 3 months long called "Introduction to Automotive Repair"....and that he could inspect the vehicles.

What a joke! We have a guy taking a 6 week course inspecting vehicles that are maintained by 3 guys with tickets and over 60 years of automotive experience. How would that go in court?

I dont know about a ticket in Georgia, Dennis...but here it means something.

There is no collateral damage from seat recession.
May I take that to mean recession refers to the "grind" as opposed the whole seat receding - as the other comment about using a straight edge might imply?

I have read the above reply to your question about leaded fuels and valve seats. I have to say that I think someone may be misleading you. I thought the same thing when I purchased my '73 dart custom. Someone told me that with modern fuels, it was unessesary to add lead to the gas. About a month later of daily driving, I burned a valve. I rebuilt the head, had hardened seats added, and drove the car another 100,000 miles without a hitch. You have to keep one thing in mind....These engines were DESIGNED for use with lead. And contrary to another person's belief, they do in fact provide lubricating protection for the seat. Ask anyone that does head work, and they will tell you the same thing. Take it from me, I have a '68 Valiant with 40,000 original miles, and I have been running lead ever since I got it, and it purrs like a kitten.

I ran a 69 225 till the pistons rattled in the bores so loud people thought I had fried a rod bearing.....on unleaded fuel....I used that same head on my new motor.

I bet your burned valve was from improper valve adjustment. (they were designed to have them adjusted)

Any 225 with 40,000 miles on it SHOULD purr like a kitten.....even without lead.

Lead is BAD for the whole friggen planet. Do us all a favour and join the 21st century.

Sandy, REALLY?????? They were designed to be adjusted?????????? Thanks for the news flash..... The valves were adjusted properly and I still burned a valve.... How would they burn if they were poorly adjusted???? It would just run crappy....Right?

Sandy is right, as the valve wears into the head, the valve "moves" upwards towards the rocker arm. As a result the lash gets tighter and tighter unitl you hang a valve open and fry it. This is why when my dad finally decided to adjust the valves in his Datsun after 300,000 miles he had to really loosen them things up to get the feeler gauge to just fit between the rocker arm and the valve tip.

The valve is cooled by contact with the valve seat. It transfers heat to the seat each time it closes. If the valve stays open it not only does not tranfer the heat but actually heats up more because it allows combustion gases to heat the back side of the valve as they leak past the valve .
