You're forgetting that caps also act as very nice filters. You usually get much cleaner power if you run it through a cap first; this was standard procedure on older tube-type amplifiers. If you pick one up now that hasn't been restored it usually works but has "60 cycle hum," because the filter caps have dried out.

Pictures were taken from sitting in the back seat.
From outside of the car it looks cleaner.

This way it leaves the original dash uncut, which is what I wanted.

Yes, they are, but you don't need a whole farad for noise filtering. Also, the amps aren't as sensitive to noise as the head unit - most installations put the cap next to the amp, instead of next to the head unit. Sure, in theory it would work a bit even in the trunk, but they'd be more effective under the dash.

i've got a 71 dart swinger 2 door...all stock still...what would be the best placement for A. the head unit (i was thinking an under-dash bracked, to keep the dash and stock AM radio in tact) and B. the speakers (i want two 6x9's and a pair of 4.5's (maybe smaller), sub and amp placement is obvious if you're askin me.
any ideas?

i also want to keep that stock speaker in place and/or replace it and have it wired to both units....

Ok, I think all A-Bodys got in the upper part behind back seats in the metal sheet mouting places for one pair of 6x9 speakers, and the 4.5 speakers can be put in the kick panels (you need to cut them or make new ones with mounting plates) or use your door panels. (also you need to cut them or make new ones) or using some brain and time, you can put the 4.5 under dash and use a small amp for stock speaker and the you go! 5 speakers working!

Kick panel mounting will give you the best sound staging - that is, the sounds will seem to be coming from the same place the recording crew wanted it to sound like they're coming from. Putting the speakers in the door panels may be a little bit louder but the sound will lose some of its direction.

I'm going with kick panel speakers. My kick panels are already in questionable shape, so I'll make some fiberglass pod replacements for them. Whereas with the door panels, if I change my mind I'd have a hard time tracking down decent replacements. If your '71 is a two door, you will probably have an easier time since you can get aftermarket ones. :)

i was kinda hopin to try some crazy box-like things near the kick panels

As a I said in my last reply you can:

A) Cut your kick panels
B) Make new kick panels with speakers mounting brakets
C) Using your dash and firewall you can put mounting brakets to get your
speakers under dash and they will not be visible

Choose one.

put your new deck in the glove box, or fabricate a device you can push a button and have it pop down from under the dash, and use remote to operate it when its up under the dash, or throw a disc changer in the trunk so you dont have to do any fabrication.

Actually I believe the holes are for one 6x9 and the optional rear defroster. I'm pretty sure that stereo wasn't available from the factory (in the US anyway) on them.

That may have been what they're meant for. But you can fit a pair of 6x9 speakers on the package tray just fine even if that's not what the factory put in the holes.

As for the kick panels, if you have a nice set of originals and don't want to cut them, you can easily make a new set for the speakers out of fiberboard with a jigsaw if they're flat like in my '66.

found a new set of kick panels on ebay...ordered my head unit and a pair of 6x9's (got a couple smaller speakers lyin around somewhere...). the amp and subs will have to wait til i get more monetary support (the next paycheck :D ).

hey rust collector...what are the dimensions on that homemade sub box...and of course does it hit nice :shock:

Don´t remember, but i could find out when I get the car home.

It uses all the room above the rearend -room for the speakers.

Basicaly I followed the instructions that came with the speakers :shock:

Oh, and it is a sealed box, no ports or anything, so it isn´t ricer loud
(but not far from it) and it needs a LOT of power.
But it sounds nice.
