Quote: I actually have no idea what you'll have to do with the jetting.......... If there's better airflow (less obstruction), you might get more air and need to go richer............
I'm already on the rich side.... maybe cuz teh original booster where so restrictive???
Quote: It's trial and error time..............
awwwww no!!!! again!

Take this post as "commercials"... I'd like to hear Gearhead opinion (and any other person who have worked with quadrajets) about this: I'm helping a friend to put together his 318 mill. Stock valvletrain, shaved heads CC'ed to 65 cc w/o gasket, gasket's a steel stocker. Headers, unbalanced 2.25" pipes one per cyl (yeah, I know, that's ain't my favourite setup neither, but it's his money and his head when it's banging-against-the-workbench time. The quad came out of a small chevy 327, so jetting is about right (we're .40" over with his 318, thats close to a 340) Runs like a champ but fouls plug with gas. soothy gas wet plugs. Only at idle and if we let it idle for more than 5 minutes. Cam ain't stock, but it ain't big enough to get a low-low-low idling vac read (wih I thought it was the culprit for letting the rods uncover the jets and idle waaaaay too rich. This carb in particular has jets on the mains but holes on the sec. Ignition is points, stock pre 72. Not my choice for that mill, I'd have spent less in stupid exhaust configuration and more on getting decent stuff under the hood... but... Any help with this? It's the first time in my like I actually work on a quadrajet. If you have no guidance I can see why people toss them for replacement holley spreadbores.... |

Sorry bout my screw-up on the airfoil. As I was writing, I was thinking to myself that we had discussed this stuff in the other thread, and why would it take this tangent now? My bad...I have so little time the last couple weeks. My Mom is passing in a week or two for certain now, so my mind is full and I have so much to do here in NC before I leave, then my ex who is watching my home in Portland, wrecked her 66 Lemans. So I must fly there and pay off the lady she hit and make it drivable again. And then be back here in 8 days! I will however, try to finish my Valiant suspension while there!!!!! On the Qjet... Look for dripping venturis at idle... Reread my links to Qjets on the Pontiac board and check the things mentioned there about throttle blade position vs idle. Keep in mind that Qjets have three different idle screws, and if you have a long taper that is not out far enough, typically, you screw the throttle blade to high to make it run and get dripping venturis. Also, the float bowl can leak thru the well plugs at the bottm on older carbs, which will richen idle and kill fuel economy while running pretty good. Check these things and I can be more specific. As you become familiar with the Qjet, people tend to grow to like them. None of mine have chokes or associated linkage, so they are easier to disassemble, but still, once you get the hang of them they are easy. I would rather do a Qjet any day of the week than a Holley. Those damn float bowls and metering blocks, associated stick on gaskets are annoying to say the least...and yes, I know that nice new ones with the right gaskets don't have that problem, but people don't bring me nice new ones to work on... I still prefer working on a Qjet to a Holley, and definately prefer the tuning results to be had. Must go make Top Fuel Funny Car parts now...we are late for work... Karl aka Gearhead |
