well you can (supposed to) fab a bracket to the block to support the weight of the turbo.. helps reduce fatigue of metal when its red hot. I'M sure youve seen pics of glowing exhaust manifolds and turbos before.

I am just curious about the ceramic coating. greatly reduces under hood temps??? major plus ??? but exposes the metal to all that extra heat since it can not dissapate. but hey I am in. I have wanted to do the turbo slant6 thing for years now. i think this group buy post coming up 4 days after i drag my first slant six car home is an omen to proceed with my deranged plans. :twisted: lol

For $200, I'm game. I'd want one with a T3 flange. I would most likely want two, one with T3 flange and one with a T4 flange (Buick GN turbo).

He is using the thermal barrier coating on the inside, right?
He would have titanium something on the outside???

In a turbo, you want as much heat as possible to get into the turbo, because it helps turn the turbine, and as long as the thermal coating is on the inside, it tries to keep the heat away from the manifold, and direct it into the turbo, just like it is supposed to :wink:

But then, I kinda agree, with all the stories about the warped/distorted /6 manifolds out there, maybe he should get a temp shedding coating on the outside?

I have a manifold just about the same right here, but I haven´t used it yet, so I can´t really comment :?

A 1 Auto sell those manifolds regularily for a little over $100

there are still a few questions though.

Where is a good source for a cheap turbo...what boost can be expected and what are the benefits of the set up.

We all know that boost is good but it is not enough to know the manifold will cost $150 and then the guy out west will port it and make it ready for a turbo for another $200...

we need to know the costs and availability of the turbo that will bolt on the application.

So we can do a cost analysis of the performance per dollar gained by this set up.

Maybe I am out in left field here...But I have lots of questions about the turbo costs etc....The Manifold is just a good start to the project.

benevolence he stated he would make the flange to mount the turbo of our choice.

turbos are like everything else how much do you want to spend. a standard brass journal bearing turbo is around 500 to 700 bucks new. You can buy recons for less.

dual ballbearing turbos like the ballistic concepts gt series from garret run from 1200 to 1800 bucks. much improved 15% faster spool. much more efficient.

I talked to a guy that switched from a journal bearing t3/t4 hybrid
( a hot upgraded tubo)
to a gt30r. his charge air temps out of the turbo were 85 dregrees cooler with the gt series on the same motor. . A major jump in efficiency. the cooler the charge air the more power. and less money you have to spend cooling it.

after that you can blow even more money on different a/r housings on both sides of the cartridge and have your wheels clipped and mix match and make hybrids. also neeed to consider/factor in the cost of aboost controller / blow off vavle upgraded fuel system and an intercooler or a meth injection kit to chemically intercool it. or both like me.

this guy is in australia, you dont have to buy from him but he has a boatload of information and some very cool online calculators for just about everything you need to spec a turbo motor from hp to boosted comp ratio // turbo selctor and even minimum octane requirements.

He mentions the angle for clearing the pan rail. Is he mocking it up for a 225 or the short deck 170. With the 170 being an inch shorter something that fits a 225 might not even come close to fitting the 170. I was just wondering cuz I'd love to add a turbo to my 170 valiant I just don't feel like doing the engineering to do it right and I wouldn't dream of doing a halfass job on it.

Can you post pics of the turbo flanges he has and what turbos they fit? I am most interested in a stock Buick GN type turbo (T4, I think?).

Hi Lou,

I am going for a t-4 flange as well. I am shooting for 300 horsepower at the crank, and the T-3s have a harder time getting there, when I have looked at the compressor maps.

It isn't a big deal to go for one now, and one later, I think. I just am trying to advise him of where we are at.

The manifold is the same on the 170. For a core to ship to him to try it would have to be a block and head with bellhousing so that starter clearance and the bellhousing brace could be factored in. That is a fairly large and heavy part to ship for a trial fit.

I have a manifold that's nearly identical to the one shown there, minus the ceramic coating. Here are a couple of my thoughts on this:

1. Could he also grind off the choke pocket while he's at it? I don't see many of these installations using it, and the tower under the choke pocket has got to be the biggest annoyance about slant six manifolds.

2. Starter clearance may be a pain with a stock starter. I'm thinking of switching to a mini-starter as the exhaust is nearly touching the starter housing and I'm worried it may get cooked.

3. Mine has a single stock K-car turbo. It spooled almost instantly but I think it's way too small for a power setup. Two of those little beasts would be about right for a mildly modified slant. But since the housing is fairly common, I may just order a much larger single turbo.

Here are his instructions
Typically I inspect parts (usually heads where there is a bunch of stuff to go bad) and let the customer know if there are any "over-and-above" issues, then I get 50%. After work is completed I email pics and ballance is paid. Then part(s) is (are) shipped.

I will need contact info for everybody so I can ask particulars if need be.


I am sending him my exhaust manifold today. I am asking for a T4 flange, and a flange for a wastegate. I think it will cost me a little more, but I hadn't thought about it until yesterday.

gmader= thanks for the contact info. I will be contacting your friend soon.

a t3 turbo with the super 60 upgrade acheives 300 hp. also you can use a swingvalve and not have to buy an external wastegate. and it will spool faster than a t4.= :lol: quicker response time.

in the world of turbos bigger is not always better. just food for thought man. and trying to save you some fabrication expense. unless you are going all out race car stuff then go ahead and be my guest.

I am looking at a gt25/gt28 it is capable of 400 hp. and internally wastegated.

I was just curious as to how much boost you guys are planning on running // what base compression pistons you plan on and maximum rpm's you can safely get out of a slant6?

I emailed mike , the guy doing the modifications last night and he called me today. We spoke about 30 minutes. He seems very nice and very knowledgeable as well. . i am confident he will do a quality job at this point and i am proceeding with this deal.


I am still wanting hear how much boost / what base compression pistons you guys are planning on running. if any of u are willing to divulge your evil and diabolical plans :twisted:


also how many rpms a stock slant6 will turn safely???
