dusten

an alternative solution=call competition cams tech line and have them recomend a cam that will do exactly what you want it to.. they will even do a custom grind for you or they probably have an equivalent cam to the mopar 244 /264 or whatever you want.

hope this helps

In my search for a Slant Six camshaft I built a spreadsheet with their parameters.

bwhitejr,

Great job on that spreadsheet. It should really be posted in the articles section for everyone to see. Maybe PM Dutra or Chuck and see if they'll post it.

I notice that your duration @0.050" number for the Chrysler cams look quite low. Their formula (multiply adv dur by 0.85) gives more realistic numbers, IIRC.

Thanks!

Post subject:  I get my cams from Reed Cams, Inc...here is the contact info

I get my cams from Reed Cams in Stockbridge, GA. 770-474-6664. Custom grinds for a slant six are, shipped, $202.08. I believe the knowledgeable person is "Dennis". They grind about anything you want, and takes about a week from order to receipt.

Depends on your intended use. Me, personally, I wouldn't build up a daily driver with a 270° cam. Rough, rumpity idle, reduced fuel economy and reduced low-end torque and driveability are fun for about three days in a daily driver, then they get old in a hurry. I like my daily drivers to idle smoothly, jump as soon as I touch the accelerator and return livable levels of mileage.

If you look at the duration at .050 though, it's only 220, which is the same as the Comp cams 264s, but it has more lift. Well, the erson is also ground 4 degrees advanced, but that shoudl help low end, right? I know there are at least a couple people on the board who have used the 264 and described it as being very streetable, but I don't remember who you were.

When I was talking to the tech rep at Erson (see my post in the Slanted Network section), he said that was the cam he used for his wife's car. Said the idle was only a little rough, but he did have issues with lack of vacuum and ran a 2200 rpm stall converter. Not really sure if the stall would be absolutely neccesary or not; I'm tryin to get a hold of him again to discuss it in a little more detail, but he seems to be kinda hard to get a hold of.

I run a Comp 264s in the Valaint.(it was free) Frankly its a yawner. It idles fine, has as much off idle as a worn out 225(plenty) . Its a fit for a Super6 and stock exhaust with 3.23 gears but offers little in the way of thrills. It runs out of steam pretty quick(4000 rpm).
If I had to pay for a cam I would get at least a 268-270 adv/dur. Hell...I run that in my work truck with TBI and an Allison converter(1000 rpm stall).

Aahhh, but fuel injection—even the PND (TBI) type—is a lot friendlier than a carburetor at idle/low speed with a big cam.

In my experience, 225s really behave well with a lot of cam. I don't consider 220@0.050" to be anything - basically stock.

My Project V racecar has a Crane 228@0.050" cam with a Holley 500 2bbl/Offy intake, ported head, and 8.8:1 comp. It idles just fine down to 600 rpm and is pretty smooth. It currently makes 200HP at the crank (14.90s in the 1/4 in 2600lb car with 3.00 rear). I have gotten over 20mpg in my 68 Dart with a similar combo. One secret is having enough compression (stock is 8.0:1 or less on real engines). The other secret is shortening the distributor mechanical advance to 10-15 deg so that you run 15 deg initial and <30 total.

My 64 Dart runs a pretty big cam (250@0.050"), and it does idle rough, BUT I have recorded the highest mileage of any of my cars - 24-27mpg@70+mph. Approx 250HP at the crank.
