So after reading through the topic the question still remains, Will the 440 dampener work on steel cranks or not?
Sure, as long as you don't want to run any belts. It will also work on cast cranks.

on my race 225 i used a 413 damper and machined a 3/8" v groove in it, there is lots of meat so it works great. i used the key way position to set the timing mark.

I still would like to know how the Big block Dampers work correctly on the slant?

I understand that they physically fit just fine.

But I would think that the Crank Harmonics from a big Block would surely Be different Than the slant, That's where I am confused..

How does that part of it work correctly?

Terry, Do you have a picture??

Was it a factory type balancer or a race / SFI approved type?

I am intrested in the possibilty of going to the BB SFI type as long as I can Run My belt.. I have had stuff explode on my car before. Not fun or cheap.

as far as i can understand it, the heavier balancer controls vibration better at higher rpms, especially on slantsixs with heavy crank weigh.the only change was to timing cover seal, change to a big block,i have had better live out of a set of bearings sents the swap.as for pictures check under virtugal drag racing there is a webshots link to my pictures you might see some there. p.s it is a factory big block part :D

Fisher also makes a bolt-on SFI damper with a belt groove in the right place.

You're over-thinking the problem... :D

The damper isn't a strongly "tuned" system. In fact its whole purpose is to PREVENT any sort of resonant (tuned) torsional vibration from ever getting started. Its a heavy mass coupled to the "free" end of the crank through a lossy (rubber ring, fluid filling, whatever) medium. That's all. It prevents the free end of the crank from "winding up and unwinding" relative to the loaded end. Heavier just has more damping capacity for the most part, and maybe a minor shift in the RPM at which it does its most effective damping.

Thanks Sandy and 'Zilla for the info - greatly apreciated.

440 Magunum,

Ok, that makes sense, I am a musician and I deal with waves and harmonics all day so that is why I was over thinking.

There is, in fact, a design difference between BB and Slant cranks. ATI makes a "superdamper" for the Slant that uses different weights and elastomer inserts (~$350-400). There are also Aussie-made (Romac) Slant 6 dampers that have the pulley groove in the right place (~$200).

You might talk to Jim Cox about getting you a Romac. I bought two of them from Cameron Tilley when I was down there.
