here in Mexico folks tend to treath 70-80 cars like trash, so I buyed everything for a neighbor that got a 73 Duster forgoten in the street for one year.

Oh, I had the impression you had bought all new stuff.

I found a distributor in an early 80s /6 truck for $10 at the local bone yard. The complete wiring harness for this electronic ignition can be purchased from a dealership for about $20. I have the part number written down somewhere if you need it. I spent $17 at the Zone for an ignition control module. This was my version for a low budget upgrade. I still have the ballast resistor in place though.

just curious, but has anyone used this set-up on a higher compression engine with mucho head work?

my compression is going to be almost 11 to 1, 4-barrel, headers, and I have oversized valves.

I am not disputing this swaps value or anything, I am just wondering if anyone had done it or not with more hi-power upgrades. Most of what I have found throughout the site leans towards an moderate upgrade, not as far as I have gone with mods.

"HEI" means "High Energy Ignition". It is the name applied by Delco-Remy, GM's former electrical equipment division, to the electronic ignition system they released for the 1975 model year. Many, many aftermarket companies make modules for the HEI system. Some of them are theoretically better than the stock (GM or reputable aftermarket replacement) module in that they may have higher RPM capacity, but the stock-type HEI module is a large upgrade from the Mopar box and is more than plenty for all but the hairiest Slant-6 applications.

Heat and moisture are the enemy of all electronics.

You're really kinda making this harder than it is!

Go re-read the HEI article which talks about brands. Or get any of the ones you list here.

If you want a specific recommendation, OK, go get the Mallory unit.

Ok- I understand about the bypass using the picture but what about the diagrams that are shown? My car had points but I converted to mopar electronic. But I want a better system -so with what I have I can still just run the ballast wires into each other and not worry about it??? (like on Reed's a body in the picture??) I have the smaller ballast resistor but Im thinking it wouldn't make any difference right???

(post by Sick6) Im kinda in the same boat as you on that one sick6, but Im gonna play with the hei on my street duster. But if you want a really nice ignition upgrade do what Im gonna do on my other engine- MSD6AL

I still have the ballast resistor in place though. Yes I'd like that part number. I need all the help I can get. Chattanooga was never a big mopar area as far as I can tell. And someone came through a few years back and bought up all or most of the older ones from yards all around. It's hard to find anything in the used mopar category. I may have to buy everything new, so part numbers will help a lot.

Mopar's "high performance" boxes mostly just extend the RPM range from what I hear. And since a slant six only needs 75% as many sparks as a V8 for a given RPM, you should be in the clear with a stock box. However, you will probably want to recurve the distributor.

At: http://duster318.freeservers.com/tech/hei.html there is a sort of how-to referring to the "Performance Distributors' HEI module." In turn Performance Distributors says: "replace your stock HEI module with the Dyna-Mod." Stock HEI? What does that mean? Exactly what is an HEI? Also at the above site it says: Heat or moisture does not affect the HEI ignition. In another place I just read that heat is the primary enemy of the HEI. Am I the only one confused by all this? Does anyone know anything about Dyna-Mod? Is there any way of determining who knows what they are talking about regarding HEI and heat? If Performance Distributors isn't the supplier for HEI, who is? etc., etc., etc. JimL
