You're getting closer! Remember, the switch has slotted bolt holes so you can loosen the hold-down bolts and "re-clock" it relative to the steering column so that it activates at the right point in the finger's movement. To fix your present situation (lights come on in Neutral rather than Reverse), loosen the switch bolts and move the switch towards the driver's side of the car. You should be able to hear/feel the "click" as the switch makes the circuit, so shift into Reverse then move the switch til it clicks, then tighten and test.

This is somewhat the same boat I am in. On my 74 one day the car started to shutter and it died but it only did this in drive and reverse . Well the next thing I noticed is I have no more back up lights so I changed the switch nope thats not it, mabe that switch was bad next one nope so now I have lights that work when they want to. Where do you adjust theses things or is my trans worn out? The car just rolled 104412.

Mopardemon, your situation is different. Assuming the circuitry is in good shape (you've got power to the switch, and the wires from the switch to the lights are good), then the plastic finger/tang inside the trans is worn down so it can't activate the switch any more. I've thought about fixing this by JB-Welding a dime or something to the end of the switch, but never tried it.

Thanks Dan well it seems to me that if I play with the gear shifter I can make it work and other times it will work on its own fine, then sometimes not at all.

Make sure and check the bushing in your shift linkage; if they are worn out it can cause problems that closely resemble a bad neutral safety switch.
