You don't have to choose one or the other, you can keep your ammeter and shunt the high current past it with an active shunt, see here (or, for a quick/lite description, see here).

The difference is that Mad Electrical's method amounts to "Haw haw, stupid Mopars, crappy wiring I don't understand because I'm a Chevy-head...rip it out and hack in a voltmeter instead, haw haw haw", while the method linked above amounts to improving and optimizing the original design. I know which one sounds better to me.
