This test- what should it cost to have a shop test it or is it so simple that its likely free?

I get Rockwell hardness tests done for free.
It takes the tester a minute or less to do. All you are doing is making a small dent on the part and then measuring it's size.

Yeah, sorry for my extended absence, but as Doc said, it only makes a small dimple. I have access to a lab here at school where I did it myself. To be /truly/ accurate, you should perform the test on the face of the tooth, but I didn't want to risk screwing the gear up, so I tested mine on the flat edge of the gear where nothing contacts it. The variation between there and the tooth shouldn't be much unless your gear has already been modified after it left the factory.
