isn't the pinion offset different? narrowing the rear corrects that.

All Ranger axles 92 and earlier were 57-1/2" wide wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face. Most were the 7.5" axle, but the 90 to 92 Rangers with the 4.0L V6 had an 8.8 axle with 28 splines. 1993 and later Ranger and Mazda B4000 rear axles were 59" wide. Explorer axles are 61" wide. The Ranger has a short axle shaft on the passenger side, longer shaft on the drivers side. therangerstation.com/techl_library has a lot of good info.

Agreed on the Ranger Station site....but the Explorer axles are the ones that need to be natrrowed....the Rangers are fine as is.

Exploder axles had the disc brakes however ,and I am personally on a quest to see if I caqn put explorer discs on a early ranger 8.8.

snazzy eh?

Sandy, if the explorer discs don't fit you might want to look at crown vic, thuderbird, etc. discs brakes.
Also I've narrowed three 8.8 explorer rear ends and they were 59 1/2" not 61". After cutting them down they come right out to about 56 1/2" +/-.125"
