Along the fixable/cleanable thought, would a soak in muriatic acid hurt the
electrical part of the sender?? If I cant find one, I might have to try that route to de rust mine.

Muriatic acid'll kill it dead.

And Dan comes thru again! I have another lead from a CT dealer, courtesy of a guy that Ive traded with on Ebay recently that has said that he has "quite a bit" of NOS coming up on Ebay in the near future, which brings up a question; Whether it be a sending unit for a gas tank, or any other part for an older Chrysler product, how does the locator work?? Who has access? Managers? Higher volume dealers only? Can I get there myself being a non dealer employee, via a site on the Web? I have 4 dealers within about 35-40 miles and no matter which one I call (I usually call the one that I know people at) all they'll tell me is that it isn't in stock at THEIR dealer, and it's NS1. I don't ever remember them telling me that some dealer 1/2 a country away has what I'm after sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Is it like a salvage yard locator, that depends on someone at the yard checking the screen and manually replying, or is it as easy as getting the right site and entering a part number? In this case maybe the Audi dealer may have the best deal since Audi isn't Chrysler? That might just work out... I was told to have my derusted, seal coated tank back Tues! (fantasy over.... I don't have luck like that ).
On the '81 truck, I would think that as long as you get the one for YOUR tank's capacity, you'd have some leeway as far as several year's sending units fitting the same tank? They sure made basically the same truck long enuf, huh??? IIRC, framewise/chassiswise, 72-93 are essentially the same truck, although I know EFI took over in the late 80s, I would venture a guess and say that, your sending unit probably supersedes to that '83 number somewhere along the line. Ive owned several 78-88 trucks, and even across the body change btw 80-81, ALOT interchanges.

Why, it's easy, Don. You've had the power to locate your own parts all along. You just have to click your heels three times and say "There's no plate like chrome...there's no plate like chrome...there's no plate like chrome..."



Often they'll only do that if you specifically ask "Could you please run that on the locator?".

Hey Dan, what name does Silke's use on Ebay?? I put silke's in on a search and get somebody in Germany. The Audi place must be real proud of theirs, $195. They answered the phone as a classic car parts source, not as an Audi dealer. (NOT complaining at all, I appreciate the info, just letting you know how its panning out!) The place in CT was sold out. They did however give me the info on a place in Akron that can rebuild the rusted one that I have so I might go that route. (1-800)-390-3996, $109.

I never had any luck finding a new sensor / fuel pickup for my 69 chevelle wagon. I ended up getting a later sender for another model and carefully swapping the parts onto my original hanger. It involved drilling some rivets and spot welds and replacing them with stainless or brass machine screws and locknuts. I only kept the hanger and the long rod for the float and the outer housing that the rod pivots in and that covers the coil/resistor. A new screen was made of brass with soldered seams

I realize this is a totally different type of car but at some point this may be what you are left with when working on an older car and no NOS or reproduction parts are available, or cannot be found. It was better for me than trying to make the parts or paying an extremely high price and waiting a month or more to have someone else restore the part, likely the same way.

I thought I put this in there before, maybe I forgot... the guy that I was referred to in rebuilding my curren sender claimed a 24 hr turnaround time, pretty quick actually!
