... Also broke a 8 3/4 Mopar axle in a 65 Valiant with a 273 motor...

Actually, I wasn't driving. I had sold the car (drag only), and went to the track with the new owner, to help him get familiar with the car. I made one run, then he got in it. When he launched, it pulled right. It took 3 tries to find the problem. Finally noticed, the car was doing left wheel only burnouts.
PS: car would got 12.7's at about 108 mph.

The thing about a locked diff is that it will squeal the tires as you go around a corner, even when you are not on the throttle. You are really just spinning the inside tire "in place" but it still squeals like your doing a burn-out so watch for cops.

I will second DD's opinion about the inside tire "chirping" its way around any corner you take.....because it will be trying to spin as fast as the outside tire is. We built a 68 pro street elcamino, and that thing would make the M/T's bark something fierse. Just my 2cents

I've had a spool and 4.56 gears in my red car. It did not drag or chirp when turning with 245-60X15 ET Streets.

It did widen the turning radius slightlty, but not too bad.

What's the worse you could do? Lose an axle? :D
!
Yep, and if under power (which is when it would usually break), the car will make a hard turn to the side of the broken axle. You will try to correct for the turn effect, and let off the throttle at the same time. Then the car will try to make a hard turn in the oposite dirrection. Ask me how I know.

Or you could be driving on wet road, and go straight, when the road curved.

Running a spool, or welded spiders on the street is in the realm of, "just becuase you can, should you."
I've run a welded centre on the street - it was in the car when I bought it (Datsun 1600 - known in the US as a Datsun 510). Was a pain in the wet, and the car went through rear tyres at an alarming rate, scrubbing all the tread off them in a week or so!
I broke the right hand diff side gear being a bit enthusiastic one night, which left me with 100% drive to the left rear. At full throttle the car required quite a bit of left lock on the steering to counteract its tendency to pull hard to the right, and jumping off the throttle would make it want to turn hard left due to the engine braking. I experimented a bit on the drive home and found that accelerating hard up to 60 mph then jumping off the gas would change the balance of the car so much I needed more than 1/2 a turn change of lock on the steering to compensate, and the tail of the car would 'wag' sideways by a couple of feet with the tyres squealing!
