sigmfsk,

Link and photos are very good! Thanks!!! :D :D :D

So the shunt will go between the output of the alternator and the battery?

hello all.

I am wondering if I can remove my ammeter all together - as right now it is functioning - but not like its suposed to.
because...

I have added 100 amp alternator from summit racing
and used extra 4 guage wiring running from alternator output post to battery + post ( with fuzes at each side just incase ) and still kept the factory wiring inplace.
but since the 4 guage wire has been added ( red in the picutre ) the majority of the load being put off by the alernator is now running thru that wire - instead of 100% running thru the factory wiring wich is old and not capable of meeting my power demands.

why would I need such a high amount of alternator power ?
car stereo.
yes im almost ashamed to say that my valiant has 3 car amps right now powering 8 speakers inside the car... but it sounds amazing and im using top of the line audio gear.

back to my issue I have with my ammeter
it is now always reading slightly to the - side of the guage as before I upgraded my alternator it would run in the + side and go way far in that side when I was playing my stereo with some power.
but
since the upgraded wiring and alternator - it just stays slightly pointed twards negative side - and fluctuates slightly... not shrue why
possibly because alot of the power is being bypased from the origonal wiring I suspect.
I have the cheap o parts store 3 pack of guages installed now / oil psi / water temp / and voltage guage - so driving around I know im in the 14volt area -
that being said - can I simply un hook and remove my ammeter guage from the dash ? - and what to do with the wires running to it ? are they still needed to hook to something to tell the alternator when and how much to charge at ? - or is this solely the job of the voltage regulator ?

it would be nice for me to have 1 less guage to have to fart with when it comes time for me to fiberglass my dashboard in to something custom enough for my car - its a show car / driver - and im verry proud of it so far.

Bolt the two wires that hooked to the ammeter together, and double heat shrink it. You do not need the ammeter but you do need that circuit to be complete. I don't remember, do you have a volt meter hooked up? That is enough to monitor the charging system.

yes I do have the voltmeter hooked up to monitor voltage while the engine is on. it usualy stays in the 14v zone exept at 750 or so rpm engine idle it might drop to the low 13s but instantly peg 14v again once reved over 900 rpm.

thanks for the info about removing the ammeter guage.
I shall remove it as soon as I start work on the dash
and finaly decide wich design to work from on re sculpting it.

Hi Ted:

Yes. The shunt will go between the alternator and the battery, so it measures all the current going in/out of the battery - other than the starter which is connected directly to the battery.

It's been a long while coming, but I summarized my ammeter setup here:

http://www.bluesbrotherscentral.com/for ... post121570

and used pics embedded directly from photobucket so you don't need to be a blues brothers central member to see them.

I hope there are some tidbits in there to help with your ammeter installation.

your friend in safe, easy-to-wire-up, ammeters,
arthur
