Car Model:
'60 through early '62 engines had a plain straight fitting screwed into the oil pump for filter mounting. No standpipe.

In mid '62 a standpipe about 3½" tall was added to the fitting in production and the standpipe-equipped fitting was released as a TSB part to address oil filter drainback.

Early in '63, a check valve was added to the fitting in addition to the standpipe, to better address oil filter drainback.

For '72 or '73, the shorter filter was released, so a shorter standpipe (p/n 3577 848) was released. This standpipe is compatible with the short or long filter. There is no reason to avoid using the long filter with the short standpipe.

Replacement oil filters most often come with the '60-'62 style "just plain fitting".

Now that we've had the history lesson...what weight of oil is in use in the cars in question? How long since the oil pressure relief valves were removed, cleaned, and reinstalled (perhaps shimmed with a 1/4" thick nut in the cap behind the spring)? That long, eh? Time to go clean the pressure relief valves! When they and their bore get dirty, they can stick partway open and bleed off oil that should be on its way to the bearings. See this thread and this one.

Some oil filter brands (e.g. Wix) are better than others (Fram) at resisting drainback.
