Thanks to the people on this site, I just acquired four cans of R-12 for $65.00 plus $14.00 for shipping. Of course I will give the cans to a qualified a/c technician to install in my Dart Sport. I think the 74 Darts used just under three cans. |

eBay. Had to try several times. I lost several of the bids for two or three cans. Finally placed my max bid on four cans, and when I came back I had won. Some of the bids for three and four cans sold for a lot more than I paid. Luck of the timing, I guess. |

I see it at the flea markets for $20-25 a can every week. Nobody has alot but several vendors have "a can or 2" hiding among their "junk". The last batch I got? 5 or 6 cans, 3 cans of "oil charge" plus a coil nail gun (think roofing) as pay for installing a PS pump on a 92 or 93 Caravan. I just put 2 cans+1 oil charge into the Fury this past weekend. There is 1 thing I have a hard time understanding; When the weatherman says on TV that "today is (was) an ozone action day" and advises everyone stay in air conditioned buildings, don't mow grass till late in the day, etc, especially those with such problems as asthma, (because the ozone saturated air is "heavier" to breathe), wouldn't you think they'd be begging for some quantity of a freon release? I mean, it seems it would clear out the air at "our level" way before it ever made it "up there". Or could the ozone from down here on such a day be bottled/processed in a similar way to how welding gases are done, and released "up there" to plug the holes? Or release some ozone every time that things like satellites and the Space Shuttle comes thru that level of the atmosphere? (have them equipped with some sort of a holding tank for that purpose) Maybe far fetched a bit, but just a few thoughts on the subject. |

The freon has no effect at sea level because it hasn't been broken down by radiation in the upper atmosphere. There is a specific chemical reaction that takes place in the ionosphere that depletes the protective ozone layer. There are other chemicals that do it as well and most are either banned or restricted. |

We plant some trees, spew less crap into the air we breathe. Buy less oil from the sponsors of terrorism. Create jobs doing what we do best, innovating and leading the way. Hey Slantfin; Chill; I hope Im not the one that "got you fired up"; Im not a chemist, I don't know all the chemical reactions or the exact conditions to make them happen; I simply posed a "what-if" type of thing, maybe it was a bit simplistic, but there are others out there that aren't up on the "whys" and how tos" that make some things happen, and what's behind the banning/extreme taxation of once commonly available, off the shelf products, as R 12 used to be. |

No Volaredon, nothing you said; I didn't even notice we were on page two. I was already a fired-up tree hugger. Like George Carlin said, we don't need to save the planet, it will shake us off like a bad case of fleas. Some of those legislative solutions can backfire and make things worse, through the law of unintended consequences. India and China are the real concern for the future of the planet. I've been to China, and they don't know about changing engine oil, and they don't have clothes dryers. When that changes, we're all in trouble. |

I friend of mine discovered this: http://www.duracool.com/Duracool/refrigerants.html Apparently, R-12A is backward compatible with regular r-12; just add to the system as you would regualr R-12. I guess it is also compatible with R-134A My friend and I just replaced the compressor in a '98 Voyagerand refilled it with r-12A. So far, so good. |

Who cares, to be honest with you, gas is a petrol, I.E HIGHLY FLAMMABLE Even if you do take out the hydrocarbons, you still have to deal with theviolent flamability of gasoline, So please children, relax, all of us, even you, are driving ticking time bombs, and TBH, i dont care if my car will explode. If the prosche that exploded due to Refrigerant had R12, peoople would be stupid to try to put it out, when you burn R-12 freon, it turns into a NERVE GAS and will asphyxiate you immediately. This thread is about finding R-12, not a POLITICAL DISCUSSION! So please, for the love of God and Allah and Buddha, and whatever you fools worship or not worship at all, LETS FIND THE BOY SOME R-12 FREON! |
