Post subject:  HEI Conversion question

While we are on the HEI topic, I get the part about removing and the ballast resistor and reconecting the wires, but what about the mopar control unit? do I just un plug it and leave the old wires in place? On my '74 they chose to put these items on the drivers side fender and all the wiring is neatly tied into the wiring harness, do they just stay there disconected at both ends, this is making more sense to me as I ask it, but answers and opinions please.

Go scroll through the HEI upgrade article, and you'll see the GM combination module/coil assembly Stephanie's using. It includes a coil with a male output terminal rather than the female type used on our stock coils and many replacements.

Stephanie, you'll likely find you can't get just the coil wire; they'll want you to buy a whole set of plug wires. If that's the case, and you don't feel like arguing, specify a wire set for a 1992 Dodge Spirit with 2.5 litre engine. Turbo or non-turbo, same wires. But actually, having said that...how long of a coil wire do you need?
I heard that NAPA sells individual wires, so I was going to look into that. But if not, I was going to try to find the least expensive set I could for the coil wire.
Honestly, I'm not sure how long yet. I need to actually look at my car and figure out where we're going to mount the module/coil assembly, then measure that distance to the distributor to get a general idea of the coil wire length. I'm going to do that today after work (I'm on my lunch break now.. lunch, at 9AM!). Does coil wire length affect performance in any way?

I have one of the wires you need. I got it as an extra in a ebay deal, and would be glad for you to have it...is $2 to much? I am using an E core solid state coil is why I needed that kind of wire, so got 2 of em.
Thank you, that would be neat, but let me first figure out which wire I'll be using and then we can see if the one you have is the right length. I'll PM you and let you know.

No -- it's purely a fit issue.

Post subject:  Michael, you could have a redundant system

Michael,

If you lean on the fender and ponder the matter you can study out where coil and dizzy wires might be left neatly hidden so you can keep the stock module wired, but not in the operating circuit. You can then have a redundant backup system to the HEI.

What I am suggesting is instead of taking the stock module out, you can have BOTH sotock and HEI systems mounted on your vehicle so you could plug the wires back in for the stock if the HEI went bad. No, I am not talking about the SAME wires, rather a redundant wire set as a backup so you don't have to do any parts swapping in a moment of crisis on the interstate. Just add a set of male tabbbed (spade) connectors on the coil terminals and add female spade connectors to your old stock module so you quickly plug in your old module to the coil. Then just unplug the coil wires from your HEI module, leave em dangle, and you won't have to unscrew the coil nuts to swap coil wires.

Sketch the stock wiring so you can see where the dizzy wires will need to go, and a replacement connector for the dizzy plug is $3 at Carquest. I assume you would use your stock end from the dizzy plug to the HEI wires , so you would just unplug the dizzy to HEI wires and plug on your replacement stock module plug wires. From experience I can tell you it is a good idea to sketch where the wires go and keep it in the glove compartment, then beside the road it is a simple matter to swap a few wires and take off again. Do the trouble shooting at home at leisure.

Post subject:  Alrighty I got it fixxed myself

Ok, so none of the stuff we have here as far as pics go are describing what kind of wire we needed to do this, so I took some awesome shots of it, and the wire fitting, so that all can see the difference. Basically, all I did was cut the ends off both wires, and splice them together using part of one of the connectors. The end result was a wire that fit both ends, and had 5.4K ohms of resistance... perfect.

Here is a perfect shot (If I do say so myself) of the connector on the GM coil.

Here are some pics of the difference between a standard wire fitting and the GM version. You will notice that the GM on has a much smaller top on it.

Here are a few of the module itself.

So there you go. The thing that bites, is that we havent had luck yet with getting the GM coil to fire, so we ended up just putting the regular EI on instead using a harness from that 76 Volare at Pick a Part. That system works good.
