the square shape to the dents looks like the rod is broke just above the big end, enough rod left on to mark the pan and push right through on two or three revolutions before it stoped, lack of oil on cylinder wall stuck piston in the bore and pulled the rod apart. probably started with an overlap bearing. i have seen this before?

Here is how it really happened. Do not ask me how I know I just Know.

Previous owner was tunning up the carb with the air filter off in the drive way in front of his two story house for the fifth time this summer. His wife alone inside wathing tv in their upstairs bedroom decides she has had enough and opens the window and throws her 2 carrot diamond wedding ring (because all slant six owner have got that kind of cash) out the window at her slant six loving husband. The ring hits the edge of the hood and the diamond seperates from the ring and falls right down the throat of the carbutetor as he in opening the throttle to see if his accelerator pump is working.

However, beeing distracted by the screams from the upstairs window he does not see it go in. So the diamond sits in the bottom of the intake manafoild while his wife throws his cloths and under wear out the window.

He packs up his stuff in the truck and throws on the air cleaner and head to his moms for a comfortable bed. Half way there the diamond is sucked into the runner, jams the valve, valve hits piston, and the rest is history. So if you find a diamond in there you will know I'm right. :P

It looks like the con rods shot right through it, haha... but who knows, maybe ceej is right
Another idea is someone decided to stab a hole in it. but probably not.
Here is a funny story...
A Mustwang friend used to go to auctions and bid on nice 'Stangs' he found. Of course, going to the "preview session" was important to plan and process.
As the story goes... one of his tricks was to carry along a busted-up connection rod, and pound it into the oil pan, on cars he wanted to bid on. He wanted the car to look like it had a blown engine. If he won the car, he would bring it home and swap on a good pan and end-up with a good deal. This "scheme" only worked some of the time, for the following...
- Yard worker(s) would hear him pounding on the car and would throw him out of the yard.
- Some compeating bidders want the car, no matter of engine condition, he would have to "walk away" from his "deception"once bidding got to high.
- He once won a "great car", swapped-out the pan and upon getting it running, found it had a rod knock!  (cheaters never win)

Some "wise" bidders caught onto his "game", one told him to stop "punching holes into oil pans"... he said he could quickly tell by the direction on the broken sheet metal, surrounding the hole, pushed inward, was his work, outward, a true rod failure.

The pan is off this engine and I have photos to up-load tonight...

Last call... Place your bets! "What Broke?"

Give details like:
- Are the rod bolts still tight?
- Is the con rod still connected to the crank?
- How many pieces is the con rod in?
- Is the piston still in one piece?

I will buy dinner for the winner, Friday night 7-11-08 at the Samoa Cookhouse!

I will say the rod bolts are tight and the big end is still on the crank, the rest of the rod is in two pieces and the piston has the lower portion broke apart (skirts broke off)

Looks just like my buddy Rob's oil pan. So I will go with the rod still being bolted to the crank, but the crank and rod are each 2-piece units. I'll even go further and say that the piston is still in the hole, fully intact, but just a little lower down and has moved its last.

The rod bolts are there, but I doubt the nuts are tight.
The rod is no longer connected to the crankshaft.
The rod is in three pieces plus there is a wadded up bearing in there somewhere.
The piston has chunks missing.

Rod bolts still there, although not tight. The large end is still together and on the crank. The crank broke and allowed the large end of the rod to hit the pan. Rod is in 2 pieces. Top part of rod and piston are still in the cylinder with a badly banged up wall. Piston is still intact.
