ted, that sounds like a good idea. If the fast idle cam was sticking, wouldn't a blip of the throttle slow it back down? When I first put the new carb on, it would do that in the mornings... it would idle super high at first start, but I'd blip the throttle and it would go back down. I looked at the old carb I took off, and they had completely taken off the fast idle cam and what not.

do you think a misadjusted choke could be a cause of this? Also, the higher idle isn't just sometimes, it's every time the engine gets warm after I've been driving for a while.

It could, like if the spring inside the assembly is getting week. Take it off and use some Kriol to loosen the bolt and readjust for more or less tension on the spring, which ever you need.

More importantly is your choke pull off working or adjusted correctly. After the car is warmed up it should pull the choke to wide open and the bell crank to where the fast idle screw just clears the steps or notches in the bellcrank. When that happens you should be idling at 600 in gear 750 rpm out of gear.
If not you may have to bend the little linkage rod so it doesn't catch on the notches in the bell crank.
Make sure that pull off is not leaking vacuum and snaps the choke open all the way.

Put a little oil on the bell crank pivot point just in case it is sticking.
