The spark plug tubes aren't "nasty". Just replace the plug tube seals (about $8 in parts, and no extra work when you replace the plugs) and you won't have leaks. Spark plug selection is much wider for the plug tube style heads than for the later heads; see spark plug links in this thread.

Thanks for the suggestions - I'm sticking with the current head for now, it looked good when I pulled the valve cover off today. Some of the rocker adjusters were loose so I swapped over the set from the spare head, but the rest of the head seems fine.


Hard to tell on the valve seals, but they're all in place at least. I poked at them gingerly and they seemed still soft but they are 44+ years old.

I did reseal the plug tubes, so I'm not so against them now....
