An alternator is one of the most inefficient devices on your car. Maybe 20% of the mechanical energy you put in is converted into electrical energy. The rest is wasted in the form of friction and heat. So right off the bat, you are loosing big time at this first step.

Sounds like a more efficient alternator would be a better invention? Any ideas out there?

how about a handcrank starter, motorcycle battery and LED headlamps? that should cut down on your power draw nicely.
