they make the pertronics for the slant to but it is about $118 but i would go for the factory unit and get you and orange box and a hot coil and goog=d plug wires and you should be fine |

Regarding the '79 Volaré Super Six: The parts you'd need for the 2bbl conversion are: Intake manifold Carburetor (can be tough to get a good one these days; parts store "remanufactured" items are trash — bonus points if the one on the engine you found is an original in rebuildable shape; if you wind up in need there are still new carbs floating around including some on my "for sale" shelf) Air cleaner Throttle control cable bracket and auto trans kickdown linkage complete from carb to bracket to transmission lever (getting hard to find and unreasonably costly, but there are workarounds) Shorter throttle cable (not from that Volaré, which has the wrong end for your firewall, but the shorter cable that'll fit your car won't be hard to get) You'd minimise hassle if you'll use the exhaust manifold from the '79, if it's in good shape, to get rid of the gasket junction at the choke stove on '70-'72 exhaust manifolds. Put in an electric choke and plan ahead; it is very much worth your while to get the good gaskets for the manifolds-to-head and intake-to-exhaust junctions. The Volaré's electronic distributor will fit and work fine in your earlier engine; whether you connect it to a Mopar-type ECU or put together some other setup is up to you. The "orange box" ECU from Mopar is not a good pick; quality and reliability are very inconsistent and generally poor. A Mopar-type ECU from Standard-BlueStreak or Echlin is a solid pick, or HEI is a good and cost-effective option if you're after a better-than-stock electronic ignition setup. |

I am going to pick up the super six setup in a few days, the guy who has it is going to pull the stuff off for me. He already scrapped the car, pulled the running engine a few days ago. He saved the kickdown linkage, but he said the throttle cable was broken so he did not save it. What would i use in its place? Also, should i just get the distributor off the engine and get new wiring and control box? Anything else i should grab? I am buying the entire engine and transmission, but only taking the few things i need. He will scrap the rest. |

I wouldn't bother with the control box. Even if you wind up using the Mopar-style ECU rather than HEI, you'd want to pick up a new box anyhow. Throttle cable: Use an ATP #Y156, which you can get from www.rockauto.com for $16 or perhaps locally. |

I recommend the HEI over the factory EI. It is easier to retrofit, simpler, cheaper, and performs better. |

Agree with others about you having a very nice looking Duster. Since a gas engine is basically a pump, anything that let it push more air throught it will improve performance. Just so you know where you're starting, try optimizing what you have now. Start with ignition. Good wires & plugs? Timing set to spec? The electronic conversion will give you a more consistent spark, particularly in the upper rev range, than points will. Run a compression check Fuel system: Look for crimped lines, clogged filter. Is carb choke working properly? Air filter ok? Exhaust: Look for crimped pipes and integrity (no leaks) of the system. There is a 6 Cylinder Mopar Performance book ($20-$30) that has all kinds of tips on the 3.7 liter (225 CID) /6. Some of the parts they recommend can be replaced by aftermarket to save a few $s. The Super 6 not only has a 2bbl carb, but the exhaust manifold has a larger pipe neck. The cars were equipped with a 2¼ inch exhaust system. I'm at about the same point you are with my 73 Dart. Doing the stuff above has been tedious, but at least I feel sure that I won't have complications from basic stuff later on. The 73 already has electronic ignition, so that's done. I'm going with a Comp Cams 264H, an AussieSpeed 4 bbl, Holley 390 carb. Jury is still out on a Super 6 exhaust or a header. In the meantime, I'm slowly collecting parts. |

This is true. Super Six cars got 2 1/4 pipe all the way back to the tailpipe tip.

I ground out the stock exhaust manifold to 2 1/4" for the last 4" or so. There is enough meat in the casting to make a smooth transition into the 2 1/4" head pipe. |

No. The exhaust manifold on "Super-6" 2bbl cars is exactly the same as the exhaust manifold on 1bbl cars. This is one of those slant-6 myths that refuses to die.Quote: Comp Cams
Erson does a better job of providing cams actually designed for slant-6s (rather than the Chevy grinds on Mopar blanks provided by Comp), at much better prices and with much better quality control and tech support than Comp have developed a reputation for providing. well emsvitil you got a deal, the only place i could find them for a slant was year one down in gerogia in there new 08 catologe i was not wanting to pay that much also it was the pertronix 2 (better than the 1 i guess but i got a question yall were refering to not useing the orange box what would be a good replacement for my stock box? and where would i get it? |

Ok, so the exhaust manifold is the same, do i take the distributor or not? As far as the electronic ignition, i would be looking for the least expensive way out on it, i can get the stock distributor included, so what is the best bet to buy to hook up to that? I read an article about building your own HEI, but that was a bit involved, is there an "off the shelf" unit to be had. I purchased an aftermarket hei distributor with the hei built in for another mopar with a 318 that worked out very well, but it was not expensive at all, i think i paid around 80 dollars for it brand new. So, here is basically what i am getting from all your advice. Buy new plugs and wires, replace the points with electronic ignition, replace the carb and intake with super six setup, replace the timing chain. Does that sum it up? I have been driving my new toy around the past 2 days, it is a joy to drive! Just a bit slow on acceleration. |

Always remember that the more power you get the less gas mileage you get. I get 13 miles to the gallon. But it is damn fast. |
