If rearranging the wires fixed it, I would bet a dollar that you were grounding out against the case of the alternator somehow. Check your voltage output. Your alt is probably fine. Just measure across the temrinals at the battery and see what voltage you get when the car is running.

Reed, I got 14.28v while running , and I then turned on headlights ,and cranked the heater fan all the way up ,and was getting around 12.90v.
I have noticed that my voltage gauge is steady now.
