If you convert it back to gasoline and do nothing else at all, it will probably pick up quite a bit of power. Propane needs quite a bit more compression to make the same horsepower as gasoline, so whoever converted it to LPG lost a lot of power unless they raised the compression at the same time (which I doubt). If they took a stock 65-horse setup and just slapped on a propane mixer, then its probably generating about 40 to 50 real horsepower at the governed speed (just a SWAG)

Stock slants got around 95 HP, so the 65 HP probably accounts for the loss of power from the propane conversion. |

An earlier post says that the 65 HP rating is in the factory manual (factory fuel was gasoline) and is likely due to the 2250 max RPM. The later propane conversion would have taken MORE horsepower away from that (unless the person who did the conversion also raised the compression-doubtful) so going back to gasoline will at least get it back to 65.

What's interesting is that the PO claimed the propane conversion resulted in more power. I agree with the previous posts that a straight propane conversion would lose power over gas, so that tells me that all was not well with the gas carb setup. I doubt I will leave it propane - let's see... Megasquirt conversion... head work... I need counseling. |
