How's the valve lash? Choppy idle, rough running... it might be something else... |

Yep, I forgot that one. Definitely check the valve lash. Good call DI!

Reed and 1980 Volare, Just to be sure....... If your hooking the distributor up to the wrong port I can see how you could possibly get too much timing and a flat spot. If your using the ported vacuum fitting, test it with another vacuum gauge to see when, and at what rpms it starts pulling vacuum and how much it pulls as you increase rpm. There should be zero vacuum on the port at idle. |

Another good point Ted. I have been assuming that both of these guys were hooking the distributor up to the ported distributor fitting on the carb and not a vacuum port that sees constant vacuum sych as the vacuum tap on the #6 runner. The distributor vacuum advance should always bee hooked up to a vacuum port that sees no vacuum at idle, but gets vacuum as soon as the throttle is opened. |

The vacuum pod on the dizzy is hooked to the correct proted vacuum port on the BBD. Got that from the factory manual.I will D/C the ported vacuum, advance the timing and back down on the idle screw at the same time, until the throttle plates are as close to closed as possible. Then, set initial timing where the car likes it, and use the idle set screw to adjust curb idle in neutral. That should get this Duster happy. ~THOR~ |

Update! Today I decided to play with it. I don't own a timing gun yet, so I figured bumping the timing a bit (enough to get the vacuum out of it) would get me close enough to drive it safely to my uncle's shop to get a timing light on it. Bumped the timing 1/4" to the end of the slot, idled it down via carb, hopped in, and it made a huge difference. Only problem was that I was now getting what felt like a lean surge at light cruise. I set the BBD back to factory spec, but I was still getting what felt like a lean surge, so I took it over to my uncle's place, yanked the dizzy, moved the plate over to allow for more advance, put it back in, and suddenly it was running rough, so I put the light on it, and found out that it was running in the high 20's for initial.... that's not good. Yanked the dizzy back out, moved the plate on the under side so that the bolt was in the middle of the travel slot, stuck it back in, fired it up and then put the light on it again. This time it was around 16 BTDC, and was still running a little rough. I kept the light on it, and retarded it to about 12 BTDC, right below where the idle became smooth. Snugged the bolt up, tuned the carb for idle speed (again) and took her out for a spin, fully expecting to get some sort of pinging.... there was none. It runs just about perfect now, it will easily spin the tires going straight if I get on it from a stop too fast, and it just goes and goes. I only have 1 thing left to figure out, and that is I think there's a bad spot on the throttle shaft, because just off idle the car kinda goes flat then comes back up, but only if I accelerate very slowly. If I just give it the go, I snap up to 30 MPH in no time, no bog, just perfect. I suppose it could also be the idle transfer slots too, if one of them is a little plugged (which would be odd, since the rest of the carb is in great shape) then that may cause the same issue, and is masked by the accelerator pump shot when I give it more throttle opening, of course, bad throttle shaft area would have the same effect, theoretically speaking. Thanks! ~THOR~ |

Cool! Getting closer. Did you adjust the metering rods? |
