The image below should help with some of the basic cam lobe design terminology. DD |

Great diagram. To be more specific, I was wondering how a change in lash settings and ramp design affects duration. I'm thinking the looser the lash setting causes a delay in the activation of the valve, hence less duration. Is that correct? |

Yes, later opening and earlier closing.

Yes, this is exactly why the industry started to use the "@ .050" checking method, it takes the lash ramps out of the measurment. BTW, lash ramps come in many "shapes and sizes", depending on the application and even the valve train type it is used with. (intake, exhaust, heavy, light, hydraulic, roller, etc.) DD |

Quote: Just spec 230 @0.050" int and 220 @ 0.050" exh with about 0.460-480" lift. If this is Oregon Cams, they have a good rep and can help you properly.
Thank you Lou. I called Oregon, but am using Delta Camshaft in Tacoma. I must have gotten the wrong person on the phone at Oregon Cams, as they didn't sound as knowledgeable or helpful? And they were more expensive...

Does Delta have a good custom regrind reputation? What is their price for a regrind? I am open to regrinders, just limited info on who's out there. Thanks, Lou |

If you call Oregon Cam Grinding you need to be able to tell them what you want and it's best to speak with Ken Heard. It's not difficult to look at the spec sheet and pick out the lobe profile(s) you want. There are slant six folks and there are cam grinding folks. I don't think we'll ever find one that's both. I would never call any cam grinder and ask for their recommendation for a slant. |

Expensive? That doesn't sound like them. They priced me $105 for reground lifters and cam. I think I'm going with a 270 grind similar to the Erson one. OregonCam guys are nice and helpful, but they don't seem to have absolute knowledge about the slant which shouldn't be fully expected. |

It's kind of interesting looking at the 'manners' of the Erson cams, it looks like the 270 would be nice for 'street/strip' use if the compression and LSA were chosen carefully...the 280/270 looks to sacrifice a bit of low end torque for a bit more 'topend' power.... -D.Idiot "For the street engine and a heavy car...10 ft/lbs of torque in a lower RPM band may be worth more than 10 HP at the top end...".... |
